Within two days we explored the really pretty, historically significant town of Veliko Tarnovo. Then we cycled over the hill to a train station, from where we took the train to Ruse, a northern border town. In the city park, we had a late and long lunch break. Randomly we met a young solo cyclist from Norway, on his way to Singapore. Such encounters are always great! We talked quite a while together until it was already late and we had to say good bye. We set off via the 'Friendship Bridge' over the river Danube to Romania. In the Romanian border town, we boarded the next train and let ourselves be carried about two days pedaling further inland.

While taking pictures of the striking 'Torch Monument', the sky turned darker and darker. We started the search for a shelter or a roof to pitch the tent for the upcoming stormy evening, but we couldn't find anything. So we decided to set up the tent next to some trees that seemed to provide a bit of shelter from the wind. As soon as the tent was fixed with some extra pegs, it started to rain. For around an hour, a massive storm rushed over our heads. The sky had this yellow-grey light that normally indicates hail, but luckily we only faced heavy rain and storm, and even from this, we were quite well sheltered by the trees next to us. The rest of the night was very quiet, and we slept really well. The next day, we took it easy, enjoyed the quiet camp spot with coffee and breakfast. Later, we pedaled on through the amazing woods, where we suddenly met the cute fire salamander and passed through the touristy crowded 'Shipka Pass'. After a fantastic, very long downhill stretch, we reached Gabrovo, where we held our midday break. In the evening, already late, we finally found a very unused path where we could pitch the tent and again had an encounter with a special cute species. That night, it rained a little bit, but the next morning, as soon as we sat in the saddle again, it started to pour down. Within minutes, everything not waterproof or covered was soaked... It had been a long time since we had to pedal in the rain. 😉

To avoid cycling in the crazy midday heat 🌞 we got up early. Our day started on a flat and small side road - nice and easy. 😊 Since Fiona wanted to visit a thracian tomb some meters beside the road we turned onto the hiking path. Haha, after some meter the path wasn't even hikable. But we fighted our way through the scrubb. 🤪 When we reached the thomb it was fully locked in a baraque and of course it was closed. 😢 Very frustrating! And we stuck in the wild bushes... 🤯 After a while and too much exhaust we found the ridable road again 😅
we cycled through Kazanlak, the city of roses. 🌹 Did you knew Bulgaria is the second largest producer of rose oil? Sadly we missed the rose festival about two weeks. and therefore all the roses where already harvested . But we saw some lavender fields🪻and imagine, Bulgaria is worldwide number one in producing lavender oil 👑
After we crossed the monument of Dimitar Blagoev (he was a Bulgarian political leader and philosopher, the founder of the Bulgarian left-wing political movement and of the first social-democratic party in the Balkans.) we could see what elevation we had to climb... 😲 And because of our (stupid but funny) excursion into the scrubb we started to pedale uphill in the crazy midday heat 🥵.
The higher and nearer we came to the Ufo-shaped Buzluzha monument, the more gigantic it apeard to us (Wiki: The Monument House of the Bulgarian Communist Party was built on Buzludzha Peak by the Bulgarian communist government and inaugurated in 1981. It commemorated the events of 1891, when a group of socialists led by Dimitar Blagoev assembled secretly in the area to form an organized socialist movement that led to the founding of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party.)
The 'Torch monument' is a part of the Buzludzha monument.

It was so so sooo hot when we reached Stara Zagora. we almost wanted to skip the visit of the monument 'Defenders of Stara Zagora Memorial Complex'. Luckily we didn't!

The National Liberation War was in full swing in 1877. Near Stara Zagora, a handful of Opalchentsi (the Bulgarian voluntary army units) faced bravely the Ottoman armies. Their feat resounds through history and sets an example of the courage and selflessness of the Bulgarian soldiers as they fought fiercely for the liberation of their motherland.
The Memorial Complex 'The Defenders of Stara Zagora' was solemnly inaugurated in 1977 in order to commemorate those admirable men who perished in the battle. The Complex's size is impressive and it is a regional and national cause of pride.
The monument represents the flag of Samara (Zamarsko Zname), which is one of the most important military symbols, a national holy item. The Flag became famous during the battle for Stara Zagora when Lieutenant Colonel Pavel Kalitin sacrificed his life in order to prevent the capturing of the flag.
Six Opalchentsi and one Russian officer are on eternal watch of the 50 m structure of the flag. They symbolize the impenetrable barrier against the army of Suleyman Pasha and the six groups of Opalchentsi, which were the beginning of the Bulgarian army.
We cycled on and found a drinking water well, where we filled our bottles with fresh water and where marc emediately took the chance to cool down by washing his feet...
To camp we found an easy plece in an abandoned field.

Plovdiv, the second-largest city of Bulgaria impressed us with its charming old town, the very special architecture, the preserved ruins of ancient times and the fantastic view from one of the so called 7 (but remaining 6 hills of Plovdiv 😎
We visited a very nice little orthodox church and the big mosque in the city center - so different...

Near Perushtitsa and ~15 km southwest of Plovdiv we pedaled across the attraction 'The Red Church' (Bulgarian: Червена църква, Chervena tsarkva.
In the Internet we found out:
The Red Church is a large partially preserved late Roman (early Byzantine) Christian basilica, dating to the late 5th–early 6th century. It is a rare example of solid brick construction in a church from Late Antiquity in Bulgaria, and it was the red colour of the bricks that gave the church its name. A number of researchers have suggested that its original name of a church was "Virgin Mary", due to the widespread cult of God's mother during the early Byzantine period...
The golden rays of the evening sun bathed the brickstone walls in a warm light and made the sight even more admirable 😍

On our way through the Rhodope mountains, we
found several picnic huts as shelter from the super strong midday sun or some rainy hours. We got some freshly picked huge mushrooms gifted after we invited the old man to drink coffee with us while waiting for the end of the rain. We cooked delicious fresh vegetables and Marc made gluten-free flatbread on our Soto stove and to our pleasure encountered a fountain every 10km with natural, not chlorinated, drinkingwater.
After having pedaled from sea level uphill for three days we cycled a really long amazing descent ( 2hours ~2000hm) through diverse forests, tiny villages, across churches of different sizes and even a lot of mosques.

Our route led us all the way uphill... we pedaled until we discovered Gradishte by coincidence.
On 'My Guide Bulgaria' is written:
'Gradishte is a historic landscape park in the
Rhodope Mountains where visitors can enjoy
spectacular views, pleasant trails, and see the
remains of an ancient Thracian rock sanctuary
According to some experts, Gradishte is the
largest temple of its kind in Bulgaria and very
possibly in Europe as well. The big rocks and
stones resemble various shapes such as
tortoise, whale, and one of them, 'the Head' at
the edge of the canyon, has now become the
symbol of the place.'
We enjoyed to stroll around these gigantig rocks.

This morning, 06.06.24, we crossed the friendship border tunnel from Greece to Bulgaria 🇬🇷 —> 🇧🇬
Soon after the border we met a very old man on a very old bicycle without gear and without breaks 😱 He was so funny, talked with hand and feet and in his own language, we answered in swissgerman 😅
And finally, after a couple of km in this new country we could leave the mainroad and cycle (+ hike a bit) on a super nice offroad track through green nature and shade giving woods 😍

Marc's father rescued a sea turtle that was trapped and tangled in garbage. The turtle was exhausted from fighting for survival, but it swam away immediately after being set free. Hopefully, it will be okay and live a long life 🐢 ❤️‍🩹
