@npub1fj4…rrpg I was really surprised to see that they're all 1080p too, even though the images within are still like what, 320 px wide? I'm guessing this is to remain crisp and pixel perfect, but still... I feel like a shader could have done that too.

I'm going to take a break from all this, I was play testing and poking the tech quite a bit. I feel a massive anxiety attack creeping up now. Maybe Spike is poking at @npub1ckk…336d support already but I haven't discussed anything with him yet. There's some API hurdles we have to address but it seems feasible for now to have support for the re-release stuff in just like we did for Q1.

Not going over some of the issues I have with the re-release in any more detail. I can feel a lot of love was put into this for the most part. There's bugs, there's some questionable changes (or rather, implementation of changes). I'm sure some will be fixed.
Really appreciate the accessibility stuff as always.
Biggest thing I'd have done differently?
Keep the NACK based networking from QW with variable tic and port the game-logic to QuakeC. Modding with multiple API targets will make modding more fragmented than ever. And now they're limiting it only Win64 as well.
Would have been a great opportunity to fix Quake II and make mods fully cross platform. I cannot understate what a great, absolutely fantastic change that would have been. It would have fixed a lot of issues modders have.
One of the developers (paril) was ironically working on this for Quake 2 some time ago, by putting the QCVM into the gamex86.dll and thus allowing people to use QC code within Quake 2 - but the game itself was never fully ported.

There's also a test map (test/paril_soundstage) that shows off reverb and tests sound attenuation. So the soundscape should be a bit more varied.

Some test maps show off new entities to aid in making objectives. Level designers might appreciate those. Those entities are named target_help and target_poi in the case of this map.

I think there's not much else worth seeing in the files. I'll have to dig deeper now in the format changes itself. First thing is trying to get this to load up in FTEQW obviously. No way I'm running KEX Quake on my workstation :P

Reading some of the technical details on the source code release page (greatly appreciated)
The network protocol changes are sensible for this re-release, but don't address any problems inherit to the protocol. So if you're expecting to be able to make any maps with a ton of entities like you're used to in modern NetQuake/QuakeWorld engines, this won't cut it. We still seem to be dumping entity states regardless of need at 10 Hz.

There's a folder named `tags` which contains plaques (like in Call of Duty MW2 2009) and one of them is a Chips Challenge one from the MS Entertainment Pack. There's a fun few in there. Don't remember this from the Q1 re-release.

I spent yesterday writing a proof-of-concept “cheat” “detection” “mechanism”.
It’s basically collecting input packet deltas over time (which degrade), tracing against line-of-sight players only when shooting and evaluating accuracy. It’s testing the results against some really-high-up-there values I’ve collected from actual pro-player matches and of course the cheater from last week. It seems to work okay and the only false positives come from people using teleporters which mess with the camera angle deltas occasionally (which can be fixed)
At the very least, the mechanism will let the admin know that something unusual is going on, it does detect really obvious cases immediately (and we should probably tally those up and just automatically call dropclient() on them if it happens too much within a short period of time to deal with spinbots)
I don’t think that such a system should punish by itself, but perhaps the “sus-tally” can be transparent to other players so they can make an educated decision. The system could also be tweaked as to detect high-skill players and to apply handicaps to them. That way “server cleaners” have more of a challenge and everyone else keeps having fun.
What do you all think? Or am I opening Pandora’s Box with this?

@npub1683…f0qg Some people may disagree with your perspective because they simply don’t see the same feed and experience it the way you do. I’m from a relatively small instance and it’s a very different experience since it mainly federates with people that interact within a certain in-group and it filters out a a lot of noise as a result. From having been on Mastodon before I know some instances have a lot of noise!
That doesn’t excuse anything, nor is my post meant to - but I feel a lot of people don’t get each other due to the missing shared experience due to decentralization.
I think you speaking up is very important and people should listen.
