AFAIK the part that went down was an "entry point" server that sits in front of all Bluesky-hosted PDSes, which is used for authentication (remnant of the original single PDS bsky.social) - so I think the few that have their own PDSes were fine, as I understand

Well, different people have different needs and different approaches to social media… a lot of people like the algorithmic Discover feed here. I've read a few times that people generally say they want a chronological feed, but in practice, other than "power users" people find algo feeds more useful.

Looks like around 2.5-3% of created posts are deleted later - my daily stats generated from a backup are about that much smaller than those generated on the server on that day. (Probably a bit more since that doesn't include whole deleted accounts, and posts deleted during the day.) #BlueskyStats

Bluesky right now is running the only AppView server (which is what clients view the network through) and Relay (which distributes data from PDSes). But someone could set up independent ones (the source is in the repo), it's just that nobody did yet.

It won't exactly be fully opt-in like it is now (and like those people wanted), it will be something in between where you'll be able to request to follow someone on Mastodon from here and they'll get a DM asking if you can follow, so that's better because they won't have to know about it in advance
