I didn't use Nostr for a long time because I didn't have a working VPN for a while. I am not comfortable with Nostr servers seeing my IP address so I simply did not open the app until I got VPN working again.
Truly decentralized apps like Nostr and Keet are excellent. They would be perfect if they made third party relaying a lot more automatic.

Pi's themselves are random in quality. Some are very reliable. Others less so. That's what you get when you buy toy quality hardware.
We recommend used ThinkPads because they were originally $1,500 enterprise quality machines but they sell for less than $200 when entire fleets are sold off lease. I particularly recommend the 2019 E series because it has upgradable RAM to 32GB and two internal SSDs. You can't get that level of reliability and performance with Pi.

I have fixed up and stress tested six ThinkPad E490. Base price range is $110-180 before shipping depending on hardware options. Cheaper for low res screen or if the case has more cosmetic blemishes, stuff that doesn't matter for a server. I'm fixing up these machines as an eco friendly hobby.
This model is particularly good for nodes because it supports two internal SSDs which is essential to maximize lighting database reliability and safety. They can also use up to 32GB RAM, although I tend to use 16GB RAM which is plenty good for a node. This is far more bang for the buck than raspberry pis. DM if you're interested.

* Service history: Judging by the low miles you can see I did very little driving. Changed oil with synthetic every year despite not reaching 5k miles. Just completed multi-point inspection and $3k of maintenance at the local Toyota dealer. Only problem was a leaking water pump (replaced). New coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid. Brakes and tires are in good condition.

What is your goal?
I like the older E490/E495 because it can use two common (thus cheap) full sized SSD's internally. Two disks is essential for lightning node database safety.
The newer E14 similarly allows for two internal SSD's but there is a major drawback. It has a nvme 2280 slot (common) but the second nvme is the short 2242 size. Those smaller drives are more rare and far more expensive if you want larger storage capacities.
If you don't care about two drives then I highly recommend the E14 Gen 3 or later Ryzen 5 or 7. You can often find them used for very cheap. Ryzen 5500U or higher are stupid powerful for the price. It even has a half decent integrated GPU.

The complication begins with it multiplexes digital signals over existing two copper wires to talk to the other devices: compressor, heat exchanger, thermostat. The wires do a lot more than just on/off. The compressor has multiple power levels and is reversible to operate in heating mode. It can also use a gas furnace as backup.

Japan's tax laws are perhaps the most hostile to Bitcoin adoption in the world. The bank regulator FSA and industry has tried for years to get the NTA to cooperate on reform but it seems impossible.
Unfair tax laws:
* 55% rate in the etc undefined income category. This part I don't mind personally. If you choose to live somewhere due to the quality of life you pay for it.
* You pay taxes on gains but you can't carry forward losses to future tax years like you can for other investment losses. This led to some strange situations where shitcoin traders went bankrupt due to paper profits and losses happening on separate years. This is the most broken and unfair part of their laws today relative to carry forward or even backwards allowed for Japanese equity trades.
* Average cost basis - this is significantly worse than FIFO, LIFO, or lot selection methodologies allowed like in America. I doubt this can ever be fixed in Japanese law because average cost basis is also how they tax stock trading capital gains.
A few bitcoin devs considered moving to Japan in past years but decided against it almost entirely because of these tax laws. A few Bitcoiners also left Japan over this.

If you have Pixel 6 and can't wait for the rumored patch tomorrow you can instead opt-in to QPR3 Beta also with the March 2023 patch level. Read the release notes and "top open issues" to decide for yourself if it is worth being stuck in beta until June.
"March 20th" is rumored from a screenshot of a customer service rep. Even if it is made available to the public tomorrow, there there is no guarantee you'll get it immediately from OTA as providers also need to approve of updates.
The beta known bugs don't look too bad to me.
My primary concern about being stuck in the beta stream until June would be it is time consuming to apply patches multiple times per month. Otherwise I'm not too concerned about running the beta and seeing new features months before other people.

If you own Pixel 6 or Samsung Exynos phones do the following until the patch is available.
* Turn off WiFi calling.
* Enable Airplane Mode.
Depending on your provider this may allow text messages to continue to work over WiFi. You must block incoming VoLTE and WiFi calls until your device has the Android March 2023 security patch level.

According to Google Project Zero they discovered 0-day "Internet-to-baseband remote code execution" affecting many millions of Samsung and Pixel 6+ modems.
Read it for yourself. It sounds very bad. If you have an affected phone you may want to turn off your SIM card because the recommended "turn off VoLTE and WiFi calling" is impossible for many of these phones after they removed the VoLTE option back in 2021.
Only thing you can do is turn it off and put pressure on the vendors to fix it.

The writer claims it's already patched by Google in the March 2023 patch level. Unfortunately that patch had been withheld from Pixel 6* due to bugs so the blog is incorrect about this already being fixed for Pixel owners.
It sounds like Samsung has a much bigger mess due to the wider variety of phones, firmwares, and providers for which they must now rush an update without breaking it. Not an easy task but they must do it.
Don't blame Google for releasing this advisory. Samsung had months to respond in a timely manner.
Do blame Google for failing to protect their own customers prior to their own advisory. I like Pixel and I want them to do better.

I bought a retail SIM card only to learn online activation requires the SV national ID number. Wasted $3.
Instead a kiosk in a supermarket had a guy selling phone plans. I asked for an activated SIM card. He asked for ID. "Oops I forgot it at the hotel." He just went ahead and activated it in his own phone before handing it over. YMMV.

I've heard Umbrel and Raspiblitz x86_64 exist but they don't seem to be well explained and are of secondary importance? I have never used the appliance distros. I use ordinary Linux and install everything as a normal Linux server with Bitcoin Core, Core Lightning, RTL, etc. If the appliance distros don't prioritize ordinary PC hardware you need sysadmin skills to do it manually.
Also don't use Tor. Tunnelsats or my self-hosted port forwarding VPN guide is vastly superior to Tor for LN. I would turn off Tor. Long story.

Unfortunately RPi was not a good choice to begin with for anything you intend to rely upon. I was mad for years about this watching people buy overpriced kits that I knew would be disappointing. From 2018 I looked into the feasibility of designing a reliable aarch64 board with two nvme SSD slots. Costs of that custom design were too high then the pandemic supply chain shortages killed feasibility even further.
The biggest time waste in the world is unreliable hardware. Umbrel and the appliance distros should really focus their efforts on ordinary PC hardware deployment and TWO INTERNAL DISKS.

SD are far too easy to wear out and RPi (?) is not a reliable platform. There's far more powerful, 1000x more reliable and cost effective options these days for a home node. If you want reliability you want to get rid of RPi, SD cards, and external attached storage. If you want safety for an LN node you absolutely need two disks. Past advice on this was dangerous because this approach used to be too expensive. Not anymore.
