I did not like the outcome of the US election, but sadly, I fully expected it. The next 4 years in the US will be interesting. Some people who are currently rejoicing over a Trump win are going to be in for a rude awakening. I don’t want to hear any complaints once the Trump/Republicans start fulfilling all of their campaign promises.

I hope Julian Assange’s release truly revives the conversation about how we can protect freedom of press and whistleblowers. Sometimes holding the government accountable requires exposing its secrets. Individuals deserve to know when their governments are violating human rights or not working in their best interests. Individuals also have the right to confront their governments about those issues and demand change. We have to work hard to ensure that the events surrounding Julian Assange (and Edward Snowden) do not just become a footnote history but actually lead to new policies/laws that protect individuals who speak out their governments.

Yes, these those things can take you far. However, I do think government surveillance agencies are equally aware of these strategies and work overtime to find new ways to circumvent them. This is what I had in mind when I made comment.

Nothing is private. There are no secrets. Technology has advanced too far. Don’t say or do anything online that you wouldn’t want the whole world to know about.
For me, the focus should be on making sure there are strong limitations on how governments can collect, store, and use the information of private citizens.

I need to spend $5000 by June 15th. It’s part of a slush fund that we get every year. It goes back to the government if we don’t spend it. It would be an opportunity to get a really nice desktop that could do some light machine learning too. We have access to a cluster for the big stuff.
However, the lab I’m joining prefers Apple, so I ended up just getting a Mac Studio with the highest specs. A Mac Pro wasn’t an option since they start at $7000.

A lot newcomers have spoke about having difficulty finding new people to follow with similar interests beyond bitcoin and typical Nostr talk. There are solutions that exist to do this, but there’s resistance to implementing them because using algorithms violates user freedom according to some people. The onboarding process also isn’t straightforward. Most people have to find a tutorial online in order to set up their an npub and wallet.
These things negatively affect the user experience and are barriers to the platform growing. I know these things take time to develop. I am not a dev, so I am complaining about things that I can’t fix and requesting people to do free labor for my convenience, which is annoying. On the other hand, if you are building a platform, then you should care about user feedback.

Agree. Many Nostr advocates will talk about freedom of speech, while working to ensure that community continues to be an echo chamber for bitcoiners and people with certain political leanings.
This is also why there is so much resistance to tweaks to the platform that would attract a more diverse user base in terms of interests and content. The Nostr community then has the nerve to act clueless about why Nostr doesn’t have more mainstream appeal.
I can find more varied content and discussions on traditional social media, which is ironic considering nostriches view Nostr as a bastion of freedom of thought/speech. Even when reading comment threads on Nostr, I rarely see differing opinions or perspectives shared. There is also a lack of nuance in the opinions offered. The community is very homogeneous and that’s a problem and boring quite frankly.

I’ve always been interested in who exactly makes up the larger nostr community. I feel like they are a lot of assumptions about the demographics and values of the people who use nostr regularly.
The loudest voices on nostr don’t necessarily speak for the majority, which probably makes it difficult to create effective solutions to improve the platform and grow the community.
It would be interesting to develop a survey of some sort to help us truly understand what people like and dislike about nostr and identify opportunities for growth.
I would love to hear people’s opinions on what information would be helpful to collect and even connect with folks who may interested on collaborating on something like this.

Working in healthcare, I can tell you that US hospitals deal with bed shortages too. This is in a mid-size city. US has terrible access to care, and something needs to be done about it. Health insurance coverage in the US is horrible. companies suck. You don’t know how many hours I’ve wasted doing prior authorizations and appeals for cheap generic medications. Insurance companies in the US dictate healthcare to the detriment of patients.

Yep, you can the music industry fighting “pirating” music. Record labels missed out on their opportunity to control music streaming.
I would also add far-right nut jobs who can’t cope with the fact that the world no longer revolves around cis-het men to the list, but I know that is not a popular opinion on Nostr.

I don’t know. I’m pretty cold-natured. I feel like I’m 🥶 at 65F. Being warm feels more cozy to me. I’ll sometimes even through my comforter in the dryer to warm it up and then snuggle under it while wearing sweat pants and a hoodie 🛌. It feels like I’m in heaven.

Companies should be held accountable when they fail to protect customer data. Heavy fines that actually cut into profits would go a long way to incentivize businesses to protect the privacy of consumers. At the very least, the increased liability would make companies reconsider the type and amount of data that they want to collect and manage.
