Similar to the difference between, for example, a parent using a child’s full name, not the abbreviated nickname they normally use. The child knows then that the parent is serious or cross.
In this case, it’s entirely impersonal and bland. Slight acquaintances making social small talk at the ‘weather and holidays’ level. Nothing negative. Pure social pleasantries. I doubt we’ve ever said the word ‘But,’ to one another.

I bumped into someone today who always uses my name excessively when we chat. Throughout the entire conversation, she finishes every sentence she says to me with my name. She is perfectly friendly, so I have no rational reason to find this odd and off-putting, but I do.

On the one hand: it’s good to stay in touch with our surroundings, to be present in the moment, to be aware of the sounds and scents and life all around us as we move through the world.
On the other hand: full-cast dramas being performed for me, just for me, played to me, under my bike helmet, into my ears, as I cycle from A to Å.

Yet again, writing Alt Text has made me look closer at the things I see. We’ve been falling over elephants all over the city for weeks with a vague notion that it had something to do with some art trail. I only looked it up when I needed to write an image description.
Now I know it’s a 'Find Elefanten' trail with 30 sculptures representing "the elephant in the room’, mental health.”
They'll be auctioned to raise funds for the Psychiatric Foundation. Good to know. Thanks, #AltText.

Something that struck me after a range of events at Aarhus International Literature Festival: every author mentioned how nice it was to be in a packed room having a slow, deep, collective conversation about books with no distractions, no clickbait-questions, nobody recording video, no online fights.
It was liberating and lovely, they said. It struck me that writers from different countries and generations each brought it up, unasked, independently of one another. It resonated.

This was a good book. (With a bit tighter editing of plot and pacing, it would be a great book.) Entertaining. Gripping. Never a dull moment. A nicely tricky and imperfect protagonist. Memorable, fully-formed secondary characters. And terrific writing, sentence after sentence, page after page.

Rain, rain, rain. Endless wind. Extreme gusts. Day after day after day. 10° in June. This Summer, like last Summer.
Weather? Or climate change? Either way, a luxury problem compared to the fatal heat in India, Sudan and other countries.
Danish Summers are now like Irish Summers. I’ve seen Denmark and Ireland ranked among the best countries to live in as the planet burns. Perhaps it’s a privilege to need wellies and a warm raincoat every day in Summer.

I often lie awake at 3am worrying about the day when the rest of the world finds out that in Denmark, we boast that we live in a ‘butter hole’.
Smørhullet. The hole you make in the middle of a bowl of porridge to put a blob of butter in.
