It is a fine balancing act. For reference, zone 3b, where I am, is the same zone as the interior of Northern Sweden and Finland. I also have indoor growing lights with low energy requirements for more tropical plants, that I bring inside in winter. The homes are already heated, they jaut need a bit of extra light, as my smal, old house doesn't have much in the way of sunny windows.
Having plants in the house is also a mental health issue, as the SAD (seasonal affective disorder) can hot quite hard. It is certainly a low energy, cost effective way of surviving our long winters - we typically have snow on the ground from the 2nd week of November all the way through to the beginning of April.

But I am growing more and more native perennials, so the dependency will wane. As to vegetables, I am investigating more ones that don't need the indoor start. Will try Jerusalem artichokes next year - I had them years ago in a different location.

I had my first ever visit by a crossbill this week - a red crossbill decided to fortify himself for the coming passage south with sunflower seed. Always a good idea to not deadhead all the flowers.

A new project, and I'm very happy so far. I got an oak bourbon cask at a great discount, cut it in half, checked that the bottom half is still water tight, rinsed it out (still faint, lovely aroma of oaked bourbon) and there you go! The lily is a tropical Nymphae variety called Moonbeam. hence the indoor setting.
