@npub1d62…tshf @npub1wu7…3d23 Maybe formal is the wrong word. It just feels too sterile and clinical to use with people you know really well unless ironically. Like I would only address my kids with it if I were reprimanding them, e.g. "Folks, it's past midnight. Go to bed." If I were being sincere, it just sounds out of place: "I sure love you folks!" Sounds like I'm talking to my neighbors.

@npub1d62…tshf @npub1wu7…3d23 "Folks" can fill that role sometimes, but I find it awfully formal and unsuitable when those being addressed are friends or family.

@npub1wu7…3d23 @npub1d62…tshf I'm totally fine with y'all. In fact it has mostly substituted "you guys" for me when addressing mixed gender groups.
It doesn't start becoming regional until "y'all" is the singular and "all y'all" is the plural.
