500 miles of Dutch-style cycle tracks built in Britain in the 1930s when cyclists out numbered drivers. What a lost opportunity that this system wasn't maintained and developed further after the 1940s.

My wife had a stall at a Christmas craft fair yesterday selling the items she makes as part of her fabric business. Another stall was selling fully lined bags for £3. The material cost must have been at least that, meaning that the stall holder/crafter was not costing for her time. If you make things to sell as a hobby, you should still charge for your time, otherwise you devalue other crafter's work.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 Cost of living price rises, especially energy costs which are through the roof for commercial users, will also be a factor. As are higher interest rates and uncertainty over further hikes making financing more difficult. All down to the Conservative govt in Westminster who are managing the economy for asset strippers not real businesses.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 Brexit will be part of the problem. Film & TV is more and more international: suddenly it is now more complex getting the staff you want here because of visa requirements. Popping over to France to shoot a scene in Paris is now a nightmare because you need carnets for the equipment: lots of additional expense and paperwork.

@npub1ezx…74mr @npub1qqz…t6ge If you are cutting the boards yourself I presume that they are random widths to make the best use of the timber. Laying a floor with random width timber is a bit of a job but the results are far more pleasing to the eye than a standardized builders merchants' job.
I've faked a random planked floor (replacing a chipboard floor in our 1790s house) by mixing three different widths (150, 180 & 200mm) which fools the casual observer.

For instance, Sheep's wool insulation is brilliant as it is better at regulating temperature than rock wool, and in addition will absorb and release moisture protecting roof timbers. It is also easier to install. Unfortunately it is also more expensive (probably partly down to economy of scale production costs) but I've installed loads in my own roof because of the benefits.

This year is Anne Macintosh's (born of Clan Farquharson) 300th birthday, also known as Colonel Anne, who raised troops for the Jacobite cause in 1745. There is an excellent play about her at the Fringe next week. Reviews of the first night (yesterday) were very positive.
