For everyone who thought link shorteners were a good idea.
The lesson here is that if you don't own it, it will undergo enshittification. Even if it looks cool today.
Posting your blog articles on Substack? Telling people to use Bluesky or Threads? Enshittification is only a matter of time. I'm not sure why most people never learn the lesson.

More combined PETG+TPU #3dprinting — this time, a glasses case that doesn't weight half a ton and that doesn't take up much room. It has TPU (rubber) on the inside to protect the glasses. One of the first prototypes, this still needs work, but is good enough for using already.

@npub13le…6saf I owned a ScanMan 256 (still have it somewhere, I think). I don't think I ever got a straight scan out of that thing. 🙂 It requires a robot-level steady hand.

@npub15ml…2w4s ID.4 owner here. Things are even worse: the "REAR" word is a touch-sensitive area, while the things right above it (the mirror folding and heating icons) are *not*. They are LEDs that you get to using the rotary knob.
Also, if your windows are halfway down and you pull both window buttons simultaneously, then *sometimes* one window will go up and the other one down. Race conditions FTW!

Mozilla seems hell-bent on destroying itself through the most inane management decisions. Instead of focusing on making a good privacy-respecting browser and an E-mail client, they are building a plethora of products, then shutting them down. And now, the bright management minds came up with a new strategy: AI is the future! (eyeroll)
Seriously, if someone told me their competitors planted management candidates to destroy Mozilla from within, I would believe it.

@npub1vz5…qdta I run these models on a laptop (MacBook Pro with M3 Max), and they run ridiculously fast. Problem is, they output mostly garbage. I tried several 34b models, and they are not even in the same league as GPT-4.

@npub1vz5…qdta Having visited Bulgaria and Hungary and compared them to Poland, I am now firmly convinced that corruption is one of the biggest things that can seriously harm development. It does damage in many ways and on many levels, directly and indirectly.
Fighting corruption is one of the most important things that can be done to help a country develop quickly.
Poland is far form perfect, but seemed to have done much better than some other former-communist-bloc neighbors.

Apparently, what used to be the "Start" menu, no longer belongs to me: it is Microsoft's way of feeding me crap. Removing Teams from the taskbar is hidden in settings. An update just installed Bing search in the taskbar. And at every step of the way there are dialogs asking for my consent, with "Not now" or "Later" instead of "No".
Quoting Vito Corleone: "How did things ever get so far? I don't know". Have we been slowly boiled to the point where we no longer complain and just accept this?

I'm going through the "Windows 11 on a new machine" setup. Coming from a Mac, this is such a soul-crushing experience. I have no idea why people say they "prefer Windows".
Apart from the crapware that comes preinstalled (McAfee? Seriously?), I feel like I own nothing on the machine. I am being treated like ad-meat, and deceptive prompts try to trick me into agreeing to my data being used and processed for ad targeting. Dark patterns everywhere.

@npub1vz5…qdta This whole story makes me sad. Polish officials are posturing before the elections ignoring the costs. And Ukrainian officials should really be more careful, given how strongly Poland helps and supports them. I suspect there are also hidden interests at play (oligarchs). Both silly and sad overall.

I needed a string templating library, and after looking around decided to write one, to avoid dependencies. Turned out to be effectively one line of code 😮
