It took me a while, but here is my first look at Vanilla OS 2.
I’d say it’s the immutable #linux distro concept pushed to a smooth, user friendly point, with most issues linked to having a read only filesystem paved over with great tooling!

Ventoy is only useful if you intend to try out multiple ISOs. If you want to run one distro, why bother with it?
I’ve also noticed an increase in weirdos and completely over the top criticism in YouTube comments. It has never been a good place but these days it’s insane how many unhinged people there are.

The other difference is that people buy PCs with Windows installed, whereas they have to install Linux themselves on hardware that might not support it well.

Yeah, that’s my experience as well. Buy a computer with Linux preinstalled, and give it to someone who has very limited experience with computers. Then give them a new Windows PC, and watch them clamour for their previous computer.

Anyone who says Linux is difficult to use, annoying, or requires a lot of user time and input to work needs to watch the latest video from @npub1wpq…nt3y.
Just seeing the amount of pop-ups, updates, issues, and hoops you need to jump through to use a new Windows PC is insane (granted, some issues in the video are because it’s an ARM PC, but most of the annoying interactions aren’t dependent on that).
As Quinn says, it’s likely faster to install Arch than to setup a new Windows PC…

Here is my look at #LinuxMint 22!
It's still one of the best desktop distributions for most people, beginners or otherwise, and even though it makes a few missteps, IMO (with Flatpaks especially), it still hits the mark.
I do have one worry, and that's the fact that maybe Mint is now trying to do too much in house. Let's talk!

Microsoft now blaming the EU for the crowdstrike issue, because the EU made them open their APIs to third party developers in 2009 is hilarious.
If your APIs had any kind of gracious error handling, this wouldn’t be an issue. Fix your bad code, Microsoft, stop pointing fingers.

We’re all pretty much used to the old desktop metaphor, with windows, menus, panels, launchers, system trays, a desktop and icons, etc.
But these sort of suck, if you really think about it it, so I took a look at these old UI conventions, and tried (and failed) to come up with a better solution for each:

To anyone wondering why videos aren’t on the Peertube channel anymore: apparently, it’s an issue with the yt-dlp library used to sync from YouTube to Peertube. The instance I use is affected, and plenty of other VPS users seem to have the same problem.
The gist of it is: Google reports the library as a bot, and thus the sync can’t be performed. So, for now, videos will be on YT only, until this can be circumvented.

A new, better (but still a bit flawed) edit mode for the desktop, explicit sync, triple buffering, input capture portal support (for Barrier-like apps), unified rounded corners, remote desktop support in the settings, Wayland session restore, and more, all make Plasma 6.1 the best Linux desktop, in my opinion:

No, the bad AI product ruined itself and its company. Just because someone created a business, found funding and created a thing doesn’t mean they should get instant recognition, and a pass for crappy stuff.
Entrepreneurs aren’t your friends, they aren’t superior, they don’t deserve to be coddled. When they make sh*t products, they should be told that they made sh*t. MKBHD did their job.

All it would take for AI to completely collapse is a ruling in the US saying these companies have to licence the content they used to train these tools.
They simply would never reach a sustainable business model if they had to fairly compensate all the people who wrote, drew, edited, sang or just created the content they use.
Simply being forced to respect attribution and licenses would kill them. Will that ruling ever happen? Maybe not. Should it? I think so.
