The Great Horned Owl is calling outside! This is not a drill!!!
We have a resident family of barred owls, but the GHO is a regular enough visitor to our little corner that I get to spot them or hear them every few months. 🥰
We have a staggering diversity of raptors around us. Birds that absolutely are direct competition to each other. Like… I’m astonished that we have enough habitat and prey here. We do put a lot of effort into holding space for the wild to happen, but wow.

I forget sometimes that most folx younger than me can’t remember a time when TV just went off the air at night. No infomercials, or reruns… just dead air.
Like, there are more obvious big deal changes that have happened in my lifetime. That one definitely blew some of my younger friends’ minds today though.

I’m pretty sure I’m the only one remotely nearby who has flowering plants. These hummingbirds have been zooming up all day with their precious little chirps 🥹.
While we have some non-native ornamentals like the crinum lily and bird of paradise in bloom, the bulk of the flowers we have open within hours of a major hurricane are the native plants like blue porterweed, swamp mallow, and fire bush. #PlantNative!

Look at these paper wasps doing such a good job despite the storm! I can even see a little larva wiggling in one of the core cells at about 12 o’clock on the circular nest.
Paper wasps are VERY chill, so I don’t remove their nest (unless they obstruct a door or something.)

I realise this is opening a can of worms 😅… Anyone have recommendations or tips on an eBike for USA-based trailer camping? This would be used only while camping with my little airstream to explore the immediate area and not for long distances, so this isn’t like a commuter or touring scenario. It will also mostly be paved/gravelled/maintained trails, so doesn’t need super-rugged trail accessibility.
I love camping adventures, but it’s time to add in some more spoonie accessibility.

@npub1aq0…py77 we’ve had luck with substituting green beans or carrot pieces for treats when our chonkernauts needed to slim down on vet’s orders. If you haven’t given it a go before, it may help avoid “sad face pupper” while de-chonking.

The swallow-tailed kites are *maybe* building a nest near the house?! Been seeing a possible pair soaring overhead for several days now. While there is an abundance of food for them, we do have a lot of larger raptors that may object to their territory being encroached.

Where you live/grew up, what is the word for the natural path between two points that often goes near a more formal walkway/sidewalk?
The formal English word is “desire path” which always gave me the ick. In german it was technically “Trampelpfad” (trampel path) but colloquially in the areas I grew up it was usually Gänsenpfad (goose path) or “Ziegenpfad” (goat path), usually dependent on which small livestock was more common to the region. #linguistics
