Getting closer with the speed graphic shutter. I will need to strip everything back and do some final repairs to the body, but it’s good to see it all working.

This is the ground glass holder for a speed graphic. It was so corroded it wouldn’t stay in. So I took it apart and cleaned it as I normally would. Then I went to reassemble it…
The springs are absolute monsters. The service manual recommends making a special tool and “positioning oneself to avoid injury”
I got the springs back in but I paid the blood price.

Alright y’all, it’s been a while coming, but here we go, the inaugural shoot.
The last challenge was a cold shoe for attaching viewfinders. I shaped a block of oak to fit, chiseled out a spot and installed a 1/4” threaded insert. (I’d like to install one more shoe for a little light meter).
Going out with the 6x9 back and the 50mm f6.3 lens. Throwing in a roll of HP5+.

Polaroid Land Camera 120 - The last of the professional model cameras polaroid made It has full manual controls. Only released in Japan and sports a 127mm f4.7 Yashica Yashinon lens with a seikosha-slv shutter with speeds from 1-1/500s.
While the roll film they were designed for has been dead for decades these are now popular targets for modification because the lenses cover 4x5 with room in the body.
This one showed up used in my area for a dime, so why not!

New print! The picture was taken outside the Tokeland Hotel on the washington coast.
- Mamiya Universal Press 6x9
- Mamiya-Sekor 50mm f6.3
- Ilford HP5+ in Rodinal 1+50
- 8x10 Ilford MG FB Warmtone (Semi-Matte)
I’ll follow up when it’s dry and flat :)

Why are Kodak’s 4x5 films so disproportionately more expensive than their 35mm and 120 counterparts?
My basic mental model of film prices is that I’m paying for film area. A roll of 35mm, a roll of 120, 4 sheets of 4x5, and one sheet of 8x10 all have the same area and so with some wiggle room should cost about the same amount.
And this roughly holds for Ilford HP5:
- 35mm $8.95
- 120 $8.71
- 4x5 $9.75 (cost for 4 sheets)
- 8x10 $8.1

Home dark room is slowly feeling dialed in.
Quick 8x10 print on Ilford MGRC. From a 6x9 on Kodak T-Max 100 taken on a Mamiya Universal (probably the 100mm/3.5 lens but it could be the 75 🤔)
Maybe tomorrow I’ll try printing fiber.

Been working on what I’m calling “the stupidest point and shoot”. It’s a hacked up original Mamiya Press body, with the 50mm/6.3 lens, and 6x9 type 3 back. Zone focus, and sports finder for framing.
Still needs leatherette and a top cap but it’s getting close!
