I think enough people have talked about the technical hell aspects of Threads federating with us, but I want to touch up on the cultural and sociological aspects of Federation. If you want a look at that, I’m not your guy.
The Fediverse has a culture — or more appropriately, cultures. Each server has their own culture and each portion of the Fediverse has their own culture. Just like the Fediverse itself, the Fediverse cultures are interoperable and interlinked, but still separate.
Culture is who we are, what we are, and how we express them. A good example is that the Fediverse has a general culture of adding content warnings and AltText. This is not a rule (although instances can make it a rule — ie part of their codified culture).
This is a cultural norm. A standard that we follow and expect others to follow, and for others to become part of our culture to follow. Other examples can be the implicit and explicit support for minorities — that’s a cultural standard. The bounty of the Fediverse is that the cultures form organically. There is no outside hand determining it.
Now let us compare Threads. We know that their “forty million” users (I hesitate to consider this number real in any way) do not have an organic culture. It’s brand new but however there is no Threads culture because the users of Threads have bought their cultural baggage with them from other corporate platforms. In addition, we know that Zucc’s algorithm means that any organic culture that may form is stymied by a algorithmic focus on growth.
In addition, the culture of Threads is fostered in isolation to that of the Fediverse’s culture. If you spin up a new general purpose instance right now, you are expecting that your Instance and your users will create their own culture that is interoperable with the greater Fediverse.
Threads users may not even know the Fediverse exists, so why care about our culture? Why care about our norms? Their cultural norms and behaviour is wildly different to ours because they have no awareness of ours.
That means that when Threads federates — even with a “large” instance — the culture of that Instance will be under extreme stress because they will have a huge (possibly 40 million, grain of salt figure) inflow of users who are not aware of our culture.
It does not matter how strong or vibrant a culture is, if there is a corporation willing to use their power to crush it. This is ultimately why not letting Threads federate is essential. Zucc and his users into the Fediverse do not care about our culture, because they have no need to. They are the dominant culture if they federate.
We have a thriving, flourishing, and organic culture here — free of any corporate malfeasance and wholly owned and controlled by its users.
Threads is the opposite and they are bigger than us. You see the problem now?

As a former librarian I wish a very friendly Fuck You and Die to book publishers. They are the scum of the Earth.
They hate libraries. Did you know that they induce artificial scarcity by making libraries pay for each digital copy of a book? Despite ebooks being infinitely replicable, they make libraries pay for more than one copy at a time. Publishers deliberately force a limit on the supply of digital library books to extort more money out of libraries for popular titles.
In addition, publishers lobbied (in the UK) to make library ebooks only work through their apps on mobile and PC, and not compatible with any Kindle/Kobo/etc so people wouldn’t get a good experience. There is a cartel — made solely of a company called Overdrive. Their app is absolute buggy dogshit. A far cry from the breezy and simple interface of an e-reader.
But it gets worse. Original proposals from the publishers wanted it so that service users could only download ebooks while physically in the library, thus negating the convenience of them!
Despite ebooks being cheaper to produce than a traditional book and infinitely reproducable, Overdrive will sometimes charge more for an ebook than a supplier would charge for the equivalent copy.
Publishers would have lobbied against the invention of public libraries if they could. And take it from me — public libraries are one of the few open spaces left on this planet where one can just exist at without needing to pay for anything.

We know that Threads will federate with at least one Mastodon instance — either Universodeon or Mastodon.social or maybe nite.
But we know that even Mastodon.social has a more laissez-faire approach to general conduct than Meta — stuff that would get you Zucc’d (eg sexuality) do not get you banned on MS; while having a a stricter line on hateful conduct — stuff that is apparently okay on Zucc (like being a bigot) is not okay on MS.
My concern is that if a major instance is to federate AND abide by Meta in order to get the Zucc Bucks, then they will need to change their moderation policy in order to line up with Zucc.
That is to say, if anyone is going to be on the Federating Instances, then I would imagine that their relatively wide gamut of free expression will suddenly have to narrow to accommodate a Puritanical Silicon Valley mindset of moderation.

Discord and Reddit are financially *fucked*, my friends. Fucked. As you may be aware, both of these companies are moving towards an IPO — a listing on the open stock exchanges. They have no choice to do so because their present investors want a return on their investments now, rather than later (this is due to interest rates).
But now we come to the main thing: Discord and Reddit have had their potential valuation cut by a whopping 47% and 45% respectively. That is only one investor (Fidelity FGBRX), but imagine the others invested in both companies are thinking the same.
What this means is that if investors who are already *inside* these companies are getting spooked; investors who will see these shares on the public market will get cold feet. It will mean that Discord and Reddit will have a poisoned IPO — where no matter how high the initial price, the value of the shares will sink like a stone.
Once that happens, there is no way back up, especially in the fragile economic situation. Reddit and Discord are toast, and it's only a matter of "when the investor cash runs out".

I know people have elucidated greatly on why Zucc is bad, but I want to hone onto one specific event.
In 2010, Facebook entered then then-newly-opened country of Myanmar under their “Free Basics” programme. Zucc would underwrite the data costs of the mobile networks. In exchange? Well, Facebook would be ‘free’ for everyone to use in the country.
This had the (un)intended effect that everyone in Myanmar associated Facebook with the Internet.
Facebook, at this point, did not have a Burmese-speaking moderation team. They would not for a while. This is important to note. The Facebook algorithm started amplifying anti-Muslim content. Because that’s what people wanted to see in Myanmar. The military-backed civilian government even spread this content on Facebook. Because of this, such content spread far and wide.
It spread so fast that it catalysed a racial and ethnic genocide in Myanmar of this Muslim minority group. It took Zucc three years into the conflict to appoint a Burmese-speaking moderation team; by which point it was too late.
Facebook willingly, knowingly, and with only their bottom line at the forefront, accelerated one of the most devastating genocides in the world.
We should not give the “benefit of a doubt” to a war criminal.

Okay, here is Yaseen’s Flags of a United Earth.
As you can tell from the colours, I based the flag off the United Nations flag. This is not a replacement for the UN flag, as that belongs to a body that represents humanity; it doesn’t represent the human population of Earth itself.
So I thought I would make something that has seven white bars, one for each continent of the Earth - but also still a homage to the UN flag due to the place the organisation has in our humanity.
I didn’t follow any vexillology principles when making my choices (cos I don’t care) but I hope this looks good anyway. I imagine this being plastered on the sides of spacecraft or something to indicate someone is of Earthen origin.
I created three variants: one where the seven bars go edge-to-edge, one where there’s a buffer of blue around the flag itself, and one where the bars go top-to-bottom.
I don’t know which one is the best, although I’m leaning towards the last one.

But primarily we should be aiming for a basic income for all persons, not just a pension scheme.

@npub1ufm…qhp4 I’m being a little hyperbolic of course, but you look at any of his musings on politics or society and you’ll find that they’re not out of place in the VVD. He even implicitly supported present Dutch pension policy (implemented by the VVD!).
I am unsurprised that Rutte is getting a VONC, the man has been in control for too long now.

Okay now that Stux has fediblocked snowdin, I can safely call him a neoliberal hack whose opinions on a variety of topics always seem to align with the ruling Rutte government. He’s basically a libcuck who has a cowardly moderation doctrine. Makes sense.
