I can't remember all the attacks I've received from Prusa themselves and its community when I've raised my voice about their misleading use of open source. Today is another small victory as Hackaday now adds its voice to many others.

Oh one more close source CoreXY 3D printer...
I don't understand why the consumer level stick to CoteXY, there are better motion systems that move the bed on the Z axis. For example, the Markforged motion has stationary motors and shorter belts.

#Prusa MK4s is officially close source!
After the MK4s announcement I've tried to find mentions of open source hardware and couldn't find anymore. They play on words like "open design" or "our code is open source" but it seems they finally admit that their hardware is close source. They announced a new app but didn't say it's open source.
They promised to release MK4 sources too as it was sold as open source hardware but we are still waiting for MK3 sources files so...

@npub1yrl…8gpm @npub12at…me5y yes I agree and it is generally not very well used in 3d printing diy world (bolt on extrusions typically). The other issue is that our printer gets hot and when you have two different metals bolted together it will warp.

However, what is not good for sure is the belt path, it must be straight otherwise you introduce error (distance will be the hypotenuse of a triangle, and it varies depending the position)

"Your phone is spying on you as well" or "Your home appliances do this" or "Same with your computer's OS".
While it is not wrong they are not an excuse to go in that direction because others do.

AFAIK Prusa has failed the design of the MK4 buddy board and the file transfer is extremely slow (hardware limitation). The only solution is to compress the gcode and one of the techniques is to use arc commands (reduce number of lines to draw an arc). Unfortunately, it is dangerous as you have broken the arcs from your CAD to create the STL/3MF and so you need to reconstruct them, this could lead to errors (I've never tested).

With Prusa pushing for arc g-code I really hope we are finally going to move out of STL (for parts designed on CAD only obviously).
It is a non-sense to go from a solid model with true arcs (like STEP) from CAD to STL that breaks the arcs and then tries to reconstruct the arcs afterward.

Brook, founder of printrbot, asked on the bird site what would be the wish list as a printer builder. Here are some of my wishes:
1. Control board: CE compliant with genuine chips and genuine quality connectors. Would be great to have SBC integrated to run Klipper without PI. Open source obviously. I have a lot of other requirements/ideas on this topic, too short for a tweet.

I think some companies are very noisy and are breaking the great open source aspect (don't get me wrong, I put many companies in there). I'll just keep sharing my work, learn from open source projects and continue to avoid those companies.
It is crazy how it has been constantly pushing to the bottom for so many years now...
