There are questions that involve a misunderstanding (not stupid, a good way to resolve the misunderstanding is to ask the question). There are questions to which you should really already know the answer (not stupid, but not good either). There are questions to which there is a straightforward answer (fine, but not great). There are questions that require a really long answer (good, but often unproductive in context). And then there are the questions that make the person you're asking stop for a minute and go "hmm... " (This is the good stuff).

Why are ports (in the computer networking sense) called ports? Is it a reference to ports like where boats go to? Because a port is a destination? Or is it the idea of a "port" as some sort of physical socket (like a HDMI port)? If so, where did *that* usage originate?
I'm currently busy, but if anyone else wants to fall down a computer history rabbit hole and report back, that would be great.

I changed a function to be 100000 times quicker, and also I refactored so it gets called once instead of 150 times (it passes the value around instead).
Definitely putting "achieved function speedup of over 1 billion percent" on my annual evaluation.

I've been reading about simulating an economy in a gamedev context and a lot of it seems to be about basically setting up an agent based model and running a market, which, yeah, would work I guess. But why can't you just skip all that difficult stuff and just use some macro formulae for how prices respond to changes in demand and supply? Like, just make up the params for the demand curves and supply curves? Then you'd have closed form solutions to how prices change? That would be way less computationally intensive, right? Presumably there's a reason not to do this... But I can't think what it would be.

(b) I think windows has built in screen capture functionality that you can get to via windows game something or other. And then it's something like alt + shift r to start recording. I can find out tomorrow when I turn on my work machine.

And every rational number has a finite representation in some base (x/y has a finite representation in base y, for example). So this means that every infinite, but repeating number, has a finite representation in some base. I don't really have a conclusion, I was just sort of surprised by that.
