What are people planning to use the new #NetBSD 10 for? I have uses I like for FreeBSD, OpenIndiana, Solaris, plus a few Linux things for hardware support and a few unportable programs.
Surely there’s something I can do besides install it on Dreamcast.

@npub1f6a…pnql @npub1fp6…wy2j I’m frequently wanting an offline version of docs, and usually have to settle for PDF. I’m still pretty happy with PDF since I still bear scars from postscript, but being able to get eg the illumos Writing Device Drivers as an epub would be lovely.
But I feel like much of the problem is dearth of clients. If I click on an epub in a browser, it doesn’t try to show me a self-contained document. Punting to calibre or iBooks is failure.

Took the evening off from useful work and played around with steam on #FreeBSD. Login, store & downloads run fine, but I haven’t found a game that runs successfully yet.
Also, I’ve got to learn how audio is wired up from Linuxulator, I could only coerce it to play through the PC speaker. Neither of the TRRS 3.5mm audio-out socket drive.
And we shall not speak of Blátǫnn.

The wonderful thing about reading other people’s contributions on GitHub is finding the software they find valuable. Until we have distributed forges that make cross-forge contribution as easy as cross-server conversations in mastodon/akkoma/firefish, I’m still going to miss the silo’s watering hole effect.

@npub14fs…qegk Yeah, I need a compute node to match my NAS. Something like a NUC running #SmartOS. Doesn’t need to be much, but a #RaspberryPi isn’t powerful enough right now. I should see if an EliteDesk has an illumos-friendly BOM.
I’m also running low on amps for the circuit powering my server closet. Need to run a dedicated 25 amp line separate from the next door rooms’ breaker.

Ah, so this is how people end up with sprawling #homelab systems.
I have two machines that I need to use physically: actual drivers to devices. But I did have it being used for support services that were too much for my dinky NAS (just enough CPU to support it’s I/O role, backups and the occasional low priority transcode). Much too much for my minimal rpi4.
This is rediculous. I used to have fewer total possessions than I now have the devices and tools in my server closet.

@npub1t7d…pqpp When I was (more) young and foolish, the folks who ran BSD & esoteric Linux were the True Hackers, thus more badass and counter-culture than myself. Just like they might hassle the dentist on the Goldwing motorcycle, but the one-percenter on a deeply chopped and bobbed custom is just going to get respect.
And part of that is perceived threat of retaliation.

I’d love to help enable the latter move, if you all have the former. Building source networks for journalists here seems useful even if the audience isn’t there yet.

It takes how much addl power, infrastructure and support material to build a terrible proof of concept corn snack? We need many orders of magnitude more precision/info-density, for a work many orders of magnitude more massive? That’s how many orders of magnitude more positions where error can be introduced?

The Winchester descends from the Henry, which Yanks relied on in Civil War. Colt M1873 was US Army standard issue since release. Colt 1911 was designed to ensure US colonial power in Philippines. M1 Garand was WWII. Then M14 & AR platform.
Guns have always been made for war, then modified for tool use.
