I remember when Walter (the owner) broke Billy Corgan's nose at Portland Underground. That's their only thread to the grunge scene.
Ronald Jones was the most imaginative guitarist of the era, but also not grunge.
If we're actually talking about the scene in Seattle, Kim Thayil was easily the most fluid and heavy all at once.
It was quite a decade.

I think you only need to look as far as New Orleans to see that music scenes from rich cultures are still alive, but they need support to thrive.
(Full disclosure: Released stuff independently and perfomed live dating back to the late 80s, and still think there is a lot of new music that's exciting today. It's a lot different process tho.)

Minority kids at school were seen as an existential threat, kept under a watchful gaze, and tailed like suspected shoplifters.
Minority kids in urban areas went through a stop and frisk by police on the way to school and a metal detector at the entrance.
When we start to consider every young white man a source of potential peril, this might be a safer place for everyone else.
