Wouldn’t an ssh tunnel be too unstable? I never had a good experience although never tried autossh. Wiregurd works fine though and easy to setup.

Yeah I went for wireguard in the end. Had to do some port forwarding on the router but everything was fairly easy to setup. A lot easier than openvpn!

What about the rest? Do you download all notes every time the app is open? I’m torn between doing just that (like pretty much every other client) and subscribing and resubscribing just for chunks of data as needed. However relays don’t seem to like this approach as they sometimes reply slower with subsequent resubscribes.

Even content from your subs will be massive at some point. Also Apple limits browser’s storage to 500MB per site which makes nostr PWAs on iPhone unusable fairly quickly (with the current model of “download and cache everything”).
Another thing is internet data which isn’t cheap depending on the country. I had Damus open the whole day the other day and it ate all my data (I had around 6GB left before).

Is it possible to search in nostr remotely? I'm building a lightweight client that doesn't follow the typical nostr approach of downloading everything from every connected relay to a device and doing search on top of the local data.
I don't see how this approach scales in the future.
