A very important part that i elided here for effect is that it's actually not true that pirate systems have no ego or reputational incentives. They are actually *vitally* and sometimes *suffocatingly* driven by social incentives because **archives are fundamentally a social process.**

Two kinds of archives of comparable scale and complexity.
Kind A:
(a) has no resources,
(b) has no-one using their real names and thus no ego incentives or accountability,
(c) is actively being hunted by the entirety of global capital, intellectual property division
Kind B:
(a) has a ton of freely given resources
(b) is entirely driven by reputation and ostensibly has accountability mechanisms for failure to deliver
(c) is wholly legal and in fact one of the least opposed endeavors of information work
When Kind A is finally hunted down and forced to suddenly purge all their servers without warning or has them captured by law enforcement, the site goes down but the archive is able to reconstruct itself in a matter of days.
When Kind B has its funding lapse it is a complete, catastrophic loss.
COULD IT BE that the pirates prove something about the survivability and effectiveness of p2p archives???? COULD IT ALSO BE that they reveal the basic patterns of power and control that drive people to consistently choose Kind B systems?????

An archive that runs on technology from 2001 and for literally $0/month, that's zero dollars and zero cents per month, serves as "the database" for an amount of data transferred that would have cost almost $1,000,000, or one million dollars, using S3. Sure torrents have come and gone from academictorrents, but it's tiny, niche, and bittorrent is 23 years old and very badly suited for research data. The ones that survive are the ones that people use and care about. If you want something to survive you can literally make that happen with a raspberry pi stashed in a storage closet with a flash drive attached to it.

Whelp, an enormous set of 12 databases of pathogen data just went *poof* when the funding dried up. The only way they are able to bring back a temporary static copy is because other foundations and universities stepped in, but aside from the death of the active databases, how long will that last?
P2P data infrastructure is not some radical pie in the sky Pipedream. It is ***the only means for making sustainable nonprofit repositories of scientific data.*** It's open data that's the pipedream without P2P.
Not only can it be done in a way thats compatible with existing cloud infrastructure, it would be *strictly additive* to its capacity, and in the case that funding dries up, can continue to exist as long as it is useful to the people affected, who can combine whatever storage and bandwidth resources they have.
The alternative of continuously needing to recreate databases, catastrophic loss, and eventually the NIH becoming totally beholden to paying increasing fractions of its tiny budget to AWS spells a grim, grim future for open data.

I think academics have an obligation as being some of the few groups that have public funding not tied to profit to use those resources for the public good. By committing to the fediverse and open source communication mediums, we can not only make mediums that directly meet our needs while making our work accessible and available to people outside the ivory tower, but help improve those mediums for everyone.
Academics have a long history of being complicit in oppressive systems, and digital communication is no exception - the prevailing publishing regime not only extracts public resources that could be used for public benefit, but powers surveillance systems that are used for repression and control like algorithmic policing, border enforcement, and so on. Twitter should have been a lesson: if we dont control the means of communication, all we are doing is creating a valuable target to be acquired and allow our need to communicate to be turned into an instrument of extraction and control.
It's not just the features of the fedi (though it gives us the chance to directly improve those too in a way that even other ostensibly federated technologies like bsky/atproto don't), but the stark ethical and political reality of academic communication - it's more important than the posts.

alright, after like a year of halfheartedly trying on and off, #FetchAllReplies is pretty much finished - the problem of not being able to see all replies to a post is one of the largest complaints that people have with mastodon in particular but also the fedi in general. It is an especially potent problem for smaller servers, making them feel lonely, and making the whole fedi seem quiet. It is also a large contributor to the 'reply guy' problem where a moderately popular post will get the same replies over and over again and people won't even know they're doing it.
This patch recursively fetches replies using activitypub collections. it does it respectfully, only when someone is explicitly looking at a post (rather than fetching all replies for everything all the time) with some debounce, and spaces out the recursive calls to the other servers in deep threads.
the only thing left is to make the posts get inserted into the web client as they are received, currently you need to refresh to see them.
trying it locally now and it is a game changer.

Not only are the "AI" conglomerates scraping everything in sight that we had the passive expectation of ownership over like our posts to launder it back to us, but the intellectual property holders are are making a killing selling work under active copyright protection to them without giving the artists and authors a dime.
The mythological narrative of copyright protecting the ability of artists to make a living was dead decades ago, but it's fully inverted into intellectual property feudalism- when the real money is from merely owning the right to a work and selling it to make products that actively undermine the value of that work, buying from intellectual property holders *harms* artists.
Steal shit. Venmo the author. It's the right thing to do.

i don't mean to be hating, i just thought it was sorta funny how isort is yno a sorting package but the order of the config docs is effectively random to me ;)
Don't mind me, but if you're asking for specific suggestions, i would love to have a description of the default sorting behavior, ideally on the homepage of the docs, because I tried to read through the docs and spent maybe ~20 minutes reading the source and i couldn't really find a succinct explanation of the default sorting behavior so i just mimicked it from vibes and what i know it does from having seen it do it.
Re: the docs design, the ToC in the pic is sorta overwhelming to me, so what I would do is remove the "Example isort.cfg" and "Example pyproject.toml" from the ToC by choking up on the max toctree depth param (i think that should do it? but idk this theme), and group them into a more manageable/explorable set of categories. I don't know isort well at all, but just skimming eg. the "known {x}" options could all get combined under "sections." It also looks like some natural categories would be "formatting" (line length, wrap length), "sorting" (even though the whole thing is sorting..., length sort, order_by_type, ), "runtime" (virtual env, extensions) and so on.
