The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is an instantly recognizable animal with its rusty red coat, white underbelly, and large bushy tail. But there's more to this furry mammal than meets the eye. Here are some fascinating facts about the red fox:
Red foxes are found throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere and are the most widespread species of fox. They have adapted to a variety of habitats including forests, grasslands, mountains, and even urban areas.
Their large, upright ears give them excellent hearing. Red foxes can locate small rodents up to 3 feet under the snow! Their eyesight is also good at night.
Red foxes are omnivores and eat a wide variety of foods including small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, grasses, berries, and fruit. They even store excess food in caches underground to eat later.
Cubs are born in a den and rely on their mother's milk for the first month. Both parents protect and bring food for the pups who emerge from the den after about 5 weeks.
