@npub17nc…9dam I just followed some of the trail starting from Berlese funnels, and realised that I didn't know words like "capture" in this context. That led me to something very promising. So much of looking things up is knowing how the community speaks.

One thing that often goes wrong with historical microscopes is that they've been greased with the wrong kind of grease. If you're good with a screwdriver (I mean that sincerely – conservators handle them with great concentration and suffering), you can usually open up the workings, clean the decayed grease out, and apply a lubricant closer to what it was designed for. Otherwise the rank-and-pinion mechanism may be badly gummed up.

@npub1rmy…6xpc I did some research in the Adelaide heritage collections. They've kept a lot of their scientific stuff, and the people there are eminently hospitable and have ethics very high among their priorities. I can put you in touch with them, if you like.

@npub1rmy…6xpc I find Stuff's approach entertaining, though. One moment they're trying so hard to look credible, and when you think they might just have managed to present one biased view well enough for a 100-level B+, BLAM they wallop you with pseudoscience, tabloid crap, America-style tales of a nobody overcoming insurmountable personal adversity, and a couple of conspiracy theories.

@npub1rmy…6xpc I bet there'd be a market for ads that don't annoy. That just sit there to be noticed along the side, like they used to be, instead of interrupting everything with stupid flashing colours and auto-playing videos. All those ever do to me is lengthen my blacklist of websites and sellers to avoid. Grammarly is the worst. It tells me repeatedly that its product is outright dumb. My job is to fix what it ruins, yet they think that I'm a prospective client! If anything, we should conspire.
