Does anyone have any recommendations for a good VPS with IPv6, the option to run one of #FreeBSD , #NetBSD , #OpenBSD or some #Illumos and cheap low tiers? Literally only need one core, 1-2GB ram and 10GB storage or something along those lines and preferably amd64 or arm64. (OCI is out already, since they refuse to let me create an account. And AWS, Azure and google cloud I'd preferably avoid)
Also yes, I'm totally fine if you suggest a service you work for/you own, just be transparent about it ^^

@npub1zfe…t7pt @npub1t7d…pqpp If you're curious: the api will give you this https://gts.ferreo.dev/@anniiii/followers.json (in case of my user) and then the next will go to https://gts.ferreo.dev/users/Anniiii/followers.json?page=1 (and so on until you hit the end of the follower list). And now that you have that list you also need to go to each of those instances (or your instances cache) and ask for that users display name and display image. Also erm, please don't use jquery anymore, all the reasons there were to use it nowadays are available through standard browser apis, so jquery is quite literally just wasting bandwidth to provide a feature you already have.

@npub1zfe…t7pt That's a lot more effort for your instance as you need to not only likely make a fair number of requests to even just get all the follower names, but then also need to make another request for each of those followers to get info like display name and profile image for them and store that in your instance. And even that still depends on hoping the instance even sends you the follower list as it is technically optional and also it may omit entries due to deciding your server is not authorized to see them or whatever. It's a lot better to just tell you to look in the original instance as you get better information and it saves a lot of traffic.

Personally I just go with naming the jail with the software its primarily running (and adding the purpose afterwards if I for some reason need multiple jails with that software).

The issue with relying solely on the sort of self moderation you describe is that it effectively means your users will first have to become the target of targeted harassment and attacks before they are likely to block it. So whilst yes this gives you ultimate freedom, you effectively also are giving absolutely zero protection to your users. Sure for some that may not be that relevant, but for minorities this actually may just be a quit moment or actively cause harm to them.

@npub1t7d…pqpp Oh I actually didn't know you could even run third party operating systems on apple hardware(aside of the whole asahi thing on the new apple silicon), I always assumed it was too locked down. And I'm even more impressed by it running FreeBSD, how's the driver support for things like camera, bluetooth and WiFi?

I often can't just quickly and easily jump to paragraph x - that had the one piece of information I need a refresher on - in a video; I can't skim a video; I can't select text and paste it somewhere else with a video; I can't even look at the video from my terminal; etc.
And the only added value of videos for explanations(that I can see anyways) can also be achieved by just having some images alongside the text, without all these downsides

Personally I've used it a lot before this redesign and then version locked it to that version for some time until I felt it was time to switch off, so I guess I'm judging the new interface more in comparison to the old interface (which was great) then in comparison to other apps.

@npub1m0z…lfl7 @npub1t7d…pqpp Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know wasm in no way is a secure sandbox. Its basically the same thing sun microsystems did with the jvm, just this time its designed by W3C (and I'm not sure that's an improvement)
Like I see no benefit of having an app compiled to wasm over having it compiled to jvm bytecode, at least from a security or portability standpoint. (with the caveat that browsers nowadays bundle a wasm runtime so you have that single extra target for portability I guess)

@npub1t7d…pqpp As a software developer myself I agree. Having docker as an option for those who want to use it (e.g. to deploy the software with k8s) is great. But it should NEVER be the primary way to compile and run the software. You're limiting portability and encourage scuffed solutions over good ones. (and no it's not portable because I can use a bhyve vm(or equivalent) running linux and install docker inside that; running containers in a VM (and likely that VM inside another VM if you're on some bigger server host) is not a valid solution. It wastes computing resources and thereby wastes your users money)

@npub1t7d…pqpp Hope you don't mind me asking but most of what I've heard about NetBSD so far just boils down to "it is portable", though I'm sure there are more things to it, then it just being a backup plan in case the hardware isn't compatible with FreeBSD or DragonFlyBSD. Red pill me on why and when NetBSD is a great choice ^^
