The #ArchLinux installer is running really well as of now.
I started back than when the so called AIF was still in place (ca. 2009) so having a simple TUI installer on the live media is pretty cool - because sometimes you just want to system fast.
Kudos to all the dev's who made it happen! :arch:
I you have not tried it:
Simply boot the install media and issue:
$ archinstall
The rest is just navigating the TUI.

The problem with SSD's is that one can't be quite sure that everything gets overwritten.
SSD's get destroyed when not used anymore.
Spinning disks can be handled by shred without issue.

You can for sure bake a newer kernel if hardware support might not be there in the version you use.
Debian for example also has backported kernels for stable.
But sure, you can always compile from source!

I loved #Gnome 2.x when it was all over the place - back in the days of yore. 😀
Should give it a fair chance for sure. It really hits in the nostalgia department.
Good thing #Debian has it all available right when installing.

I always like having different systems around me...
This brought me to a article that I've read in the past about a always on little system (low powered) that holds all the needed files to work/learn with.
All my files live on my NAS anyway - so having a system I ssh into to do my daily tasks would make sense.
This would also solve the issue of having to setup everything all the time on the system I'm using at the moment. 🙂
Does anyone have a setup like that? 😎

Btw: The 120W include the monitor - which takes 25 - 30W (2k display, IPS)
So it roughly equates to: 90W in idle.

Currently, it draws around 60 - 70W under normal load - that is miles better than the Ryzen which draws 120W constant in idle.
VM's work well and so far the power usage is totally ok.
System:
i7 8700 (With iGPU - which I use)
32GB Corsair RAM
512GB NVMe
bequiet Black Rock Cooler
Case: It does what it is supposed to (Don't care about that at all)
30 Euros invested for a cooler and off it went... seems good in my book 😎

I seem to have found a working solution for my daily driver problem.
The mini pc I used is great - no question about it.
But it can't really compete with more than maybe two vm's... which for me was a huge issue. (I do stuff for work in a Windows vm and also have a dev vm running).
The solution:
Me being a tech hoarder has found another system with a decent i7 processor that fits into a PC that I've had laying around here... ordered a new cooler and now the system runs well - with 32GB of RAM.

Tech hoarding (on a small level) really is amazing. 😆
Just remembered that I had a OptiPlex with a i7 8700 laying around the room....
I can take the CPU from that system and put it into a refurb PC that I have (That one has a i5 8500 currently).
And a new PC with a great CPU was born out of the ashes of my tech hoarding addiction 😂
Next step: Cleanung up the PC - got dusty quite a bit!
A new workstation was born 😀

I gotta count my losses....
Was trying to make it work to daily drive a smaller system...
Well... having a couple of VM's and dual booting for gaming tasks was not really that great.
Back on my PC for now.
I love smaller systems to tinker with - but they can't at this point replace my pc (Given the workflow I have).
(Esp. gaming and running VM's)
But: The mini system will replace my current server... bonus: it has much more power 😎
So it is all good in the end! 🙂

Currently only using #vim ...and I love it!
I used to use #vscodium a lot but was always interested in just having a simple terminal application on hand that works everywhere.
So: #vim with addons has all the things I need.
I currently use #nerdtree a lot and it is awesome!
Being able to just open a terminal emulator window and open #vim is easy and fast.

Rant:
Had a 27" 2k IPS panel... then a 32" 4k ultrawide followed....
Now I'm back on a 24" FHD panel.
Why?
I do not need much more. The resolution is totally fine for me.
I rather work with workspaces in #Xfce now than having 100 windows open on one.
Little side effect.
Before my monitor (Both) used about 40W.... now down to 10W
It is truly amazing how much energy one can conserve with making, to me, small changes.

Made a decision.
For the longest time I've always had too many distros that I tried to run and support.
I need to fokus on something in the end... and not drift around all the time.
So, #Debian it is - only
I use #Debian all day / every day.
It does not make sense for me to run any other distro.
On the #BSD side I will focus on #FreeBSD - that's it.
The many distros / derivatives have learned me a lot over the years... and I'm very thankful for that. But, less is more.
