Spicy thought experiment, if money is truly and finally separated from state, what is left? Wouldn't a new version of governance emerge that is based on the Bitcoin standard? Excellent points and very real threats. My hope and belief is that we are early enough and there has been enough institutional adoption (which is controversial I realize) that the biggest threat to widespread and immediate Bitcoin adoptionis the existing system stabilizing.
Even in that scenario, I believe the transition from fiat to Bitcoin will be allowed to continue in a more orderly fashion, albeit likely a longer adoption curve.
Regarding Internet access, my hope is our global society will not stand for regulated access. There may be pockets of government overreach, but the genie is out of the bottle. The people demand access to information.

had an interesting thought experiment ... one candidate wins, doesn't attack Bitcoin, reigns in gov spending, reduces inflation, saves the dollar ...or... the other candidate wins, increases gov spending, attacks Bitcoin, inflation goes wild, dollar falls apart, global scramble for dollar exit doors ... which one is better for Bitcoin? is either outcome even bad for Bitcoin? or as some suggest, does anything even stop this train regardless of who wins?

Great points. I agree it's not perfect, but each user could tune how much they want to slow down spammers vs not see valuable content. I like the upfront PoW cost as a further hurdle and I like the WoT / meet up layers as well. Maybe some of all of it. I suspect there is no silver bullet, but also that real Nostr users who put in the effort and PoW should have better visibility. Interesting about Gel's comment that this can turn into an elite club. Real world example in Club House.
It will be fun to see how this evolves.

Love the discussion, thank you! Sorry I wasn't more explicit, but I meant use the Bitcoin network and existing PoW protocol. In other words, every post, like, and repost would require a one or more Satoshi transaction, but imbedded in the protocol, in your client. You can acquire those sats any way you ordinarily get sats... great quality content to earn zaps, buy them, mine, etc.

Seems like this problem was already solved with Adam Back's proof of work. Read is free, but impose a physical cost to write. That cost has to be enough to make spam economically infeasible, but not so drastic as to impact anyone's ability to afford to write. The relay, client, and individual settings dictate the filter level of PoW cost to write. Some experience low or no spam, some experience higher value (more expensive) spam, some experience lots of spam... all based on preference. If the AIs create valuable enough "spam" then users will want to see it and the individuals paying to spam will be able to afford it.
For a cost example, one sat per post would mean about $7 per year for 30 posts every day.
Just making this up as I go, what are the problems with this strategy?

Not a TA guy, but I tried drawing lines based on the new trend of higher lows during lower highs. If this "astrology for men" works then *something* will happen around September 27th, the question as always is, what? Rational Roots spiral chart is cool. Last time peaked between 10k and 100k, next one could peak between 100k and 1M. Would be pretty epic to melt faces to 700k over the next year or so. All the aforementioned price and time speculation is somewhat hollow, but it wouldn't be out of line historically speaking for it to play out this way. Ironically if it didn't play out that way... it would indicate something actually being different this time.

How about a hash cash based pow concept where nostritches have to Zap the network or a specific relay or something like that to make a post. Cost to post goes up until spam decreases, almost like a difficulty adjustment. Every action (post, like, repost, etc) all has imbedded zaps. It would also be acceptable for a lower tier, less expensive experience that has more spam but costs less (nothing?). In this way end users can specify how much they want to spend and what they want their experience to be like. Could also provide incentive to run relays. Market dynamics would reward most freedom, least censorship, best / fastest relay performance.

I'm also class of '21 and agree with much of what you say. My conservative case in '21 was hold till '31 and hope for, plan for $500k by then. After 3 years that is now beginning to look optimistic. Also, I didn't take into account just how insidious and dramatic inflation could be. Now I think the $500k number in '31 likely won't be nearly good enough. But, that's the whole point of Bitcoin, to solve this problem. There is still nothing fundamentally better than Bitcoin at this job. So I hodl.
