3:30pm: turbine starts and is on for five minutes; does it stop for the 10 minutes the driver is inside doing the errand? choices to make here! this is either one start/stop or two, depending on how you answer that question
4:30pm: turbine starts and is on for, what, 20 minutes? then it's on for another 30 minutes while you idle (doing nothing)
5pm: if the turbine never stopped, it needs to start again, runs for 10 minutes, then stops
5:45pm: turbine starts, goes for 1 minute, stops
6:00pm: turbine starts, goes for 30 minutes, stops
so, for this utterly representative usage pattern for ***one day*** of automobile usage, with a pure-turbine design, we have seven turbine cycles ***minimum***, and possibly as many as ten
we also have lots of "dead time" during which it's not doing anything useful, simply burning gas (possibly as much as an hour, depending on how bad your choices are)
we haven't even gotten into "oops I turned the car on and forgot something in the store so I have to go back in"
this gets stupid very quickly, especially when you're dealing with something that ideally ***should*** only be turned on one single time in a day, at most

you're ignoring the usual use case, though, I think
cars engage in a lot of stop-and-go, and short trips interspersed with longer ones
there is a cost to spinning up a turbine for that 3-mile trip to the store; what do you do with the hour the person is in the store? burn fuel for that hour (which is a total waste) to keep the turbine at speed? or do you shut it down and start it up again (wasted fuel getting back up to speed, more wear on components)?
for a very large chunk of use cases, including most city usage, the turbine shouldn't be on at all; it should only be activated when you ***know*** that it is going to need to be on for a long time, such as a long trip without stops, or when the power output can be used to do something useful (such as "refill the battery")

what you want is to avoid spinning up the turbine, though, unless it's for a long-term recharge cycle (which might include main power provision); this wastes fuel and causes wear
(remember, turbines like to be steady-state)
the goal is to have battery handle the power demand until it gets down to 33% or whatever, at which point the turbine spins up for 2 hours or however long to fully recharge it, at which point it spins down again
you really don't want the turbine spinning longer than it has to, but you also don't want it spinning up more times than it has to; there's a sweet-spot here that you want to hit, and it's almost certain to require batteries to hit it

this is where turbine cars would really shine
they used to make them, but the problem with a turbine is that it likes steady and continuous, and that's not the usual power requirements for an automobile
but if you had a combination battery/capacitor/turbine all-electric powertrain, with the right management intelligence built-in, you could have something that would fuelable with basically anything from propane to diesel, would be capable of standalone self-recharging, would have great range (full battery + full fuel tank), and would have all kinds of performance
the downside would be the weight, but I have to think that would be manageable, because you could (and would have to) put the battery deck on a diet to be able to fit the turbine

a car that slowly recharged itself off an RTG would definitely be pretty solid (leave your EV parked there, and one week later it's topped off even if you didn't plug it in)
(this would also solve the "heater" problem in cold climates)

the amount of current you're going to get out of one of those is real disappointing, though
it's good for extremely-low-low-power stuff (think CMOS clock) or long-term recharging of something that gets drained quickly but doesn't need to be on for very long or all the time
you will not be powering your Tesla with any-sized array of those, you'd do better to have some spiffy microreactor wired to a steam turbine

I think a huge and underappreciated part of this is how parasitic "AI" and related things are on the gossamer web of international trade and industry
imagine if you, personally, had your heart ripped out and were reliant on an ECMO machine powered by a thousand people squeezing those little BP cuff inflation bulb doohickeys in unison
the thing is, you no longer have a heart - you're not growing one back, so your existence is now intimately tied into the ability and willingness of some random thousand people to stand there and squeeze the bulb in time to "Stayin' Alive" on endless loop
they can go get food, they can go on-and-off shift, they can walk around, whatever; you are stuck there, and if they don't pump, and correctly, you die
this is the position that AIs are in, basically: if industrial civilization fails, or even suffers "too much" of a recession, those digital brains go kaput

I will once again reiterate the fact that "AI", as it exists now and as it will continue to exist, is sleight-of-hand: it steals energy from "less valued" (but no less important) tasks to boost its performance on specific, very narrow tasks, and by the time you add all the pieces back in to make it a viable organism, you have lost to biology yet again
your "robot" is not going to be superior to *any* worker, much less a White one, without a massive logistics tail behind it replicating (badly) all of the things that biological organisms do just as a matter of habit or design, and without reductions and simplifications in its processing space that make it as unsuitable for life outside a sterile factory as an orchid is for life in the Arctic outside a hothouse
we won't even get into what's going to happen with that "disruption cycle", which isn't gonna go how you think it will by a long shot

it isn't the standardization of the units that's going to make inroads on the problem, however; it's the fact that vast swathes of that scenario-space are going to be definitionally un-standardizable
you may be able to get away with a "diesel mechanic service bay" that you drive your car into and which replaces certain pieces for you easily; that would be a piece of capital equipment the size of a building inside which the entire environment can be defined and controlled
but you are not going to ever make a DieselMechanoBot that can go to "wherever" and turn a wrench autonomously for less than it would cost to identify and train the MkI MeatBot to do the same task
that's because by the time you account for all of the corner-cases and adverse conditions to equip the MechanoBot to deal with, ***that the MeatBot can do purely by accident***, you're well into "ludicrous money/effort/resources" territory

there is zero efficiency gain for making a robot do most of those things; all of the gains of technology come from ***redefining the problem space*** to permit the efficient use of large-scale solutions
for one-offs and custom environments, it is going to remain far, far cheaper to employ the Mk I Meatbot
