The more I read about Telo Trucks, the more I want one.
Even though they're a new company that's about to face an uphill fight to build electric vehicles in the US, which is hostile towards non-Tesla EVs, the fact they're focusing on off-the-shelf hardware and repairability would give me comfort that, if they did end up having to fail, it'd still be repairable and serviceable in the long term.
But also, they seem to be hitting all the right features notes for me.
I'm tempted to put in my reservation.

Well, I don't have compatible hardware to run RNode, which implements Reticulum on LoRa devices. There's a firmware for Heltec V2 but not V3. Apparently the V3 is planned, but that was mentioned some time ago.
Given Reticulum is carrier agnostic, I can still play with it, just not over LoRa for now.
But having no iOS communication app for this, it, ultimately, kinda excludes me. Meshtastic has its problems, but it's actually usable.

I've been reading about Reticulum, which is a network stack that can run over just about anything, including LoRa.
It’s not compatible with Meshtastic so it's either/or with choosing one to run on a node.
It's kinda interesting. It's intended to allow running any application over the network and it will be securely and privately routed.
Meshtastic and Reticulum aren't really comparable. Meshtastic is more of a messaging application that uses the LoRa radio. Reticulum, by itself, is infrastructure to put applications on.
There are messaging applications that work on Reticulum using Lightweight Extensible Message Format (LXMF). I think these applications can work similar to how Meshtastic works, though I'm not sure if it can do anything like a "default" channel like Meshtastic for just broadcasting messages.
I guess I have another rabbit hole to explore.
There doesn't appear to be any iOS apps for talking to a Reticulum LoRa node, so not sure this is something I'll commit to.
My stationary node will continue to run Meshtastic for now.

So I’ve confirmed with another Heltec V3 module that putting it into ROUTER role is no good.
In any case, I’ve been informed that setting a node to ROUTER may be less desired. So I’ll leave my stationary node in CLIENT role.
It’s ready to deploy, at this point. It has dual 18650 battery backing it up, and will have a solar panel attached.
I’ll mount it up maybe tomorrow.

Because Mozilla uses tools for collecting usage metrics and has some marketing and tracking stuff built in, any third party involved in this would receive this data, and the CCPA considers this “selling data”.
It can apparently be so over-broad that service providers have included this kind of language simply for your data being hosted in their services in a third party provider like Hetzner, AWS, etc.
So it appears to be some potentially over-broad definitions in law.

I’m playing with AllenAI OLMo2 LLM.
It kept insisting my use of insulin and my TDD indicated high insulin resistance.
When I noted my c-peptide result is around 1.1ng/dL, it adjusted its view and indicated my TDD would present a challenge in keeping up with goals as a T2D.
My Time In Range is well over 90% while using an insulin pump with a TDD between 30 and 40 units per day.
When I talk about how T2D can be complicated, this is what I mean. Things aren’t always as simple as “lose weight, cure diabetes”.
And this is why we put our trust in humans who are able to reason with modern data to provide our healthcare.
I will say, among the small LLMs that you can run on your own at home, OLMo2 is among the most impressive in terms of emulating knowledge. It’s wild that it doesn’t get more attention. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s very much confidently lying to me.

@nprofile…wuyc When I was looking at going to an EV, I was deciding between Kia Niro EV and Chevy Bolt EUV. Chevy pulled the Bolt from the market and made my decision for me.
Apparently it's coming back, but I'm already in what I consider to be a good EV.
I'm looking at upcoming EVs, including from the likes of Ford and Chevy, which seem to be targeting foreign markets and not the US for some reason. It's like a giant footgun as imports are filling those markets that people actually want.

I was opposed to the whole “TikTok ban” situation. But ByteDance may have proven Congress’s point.
Biden noted he would not enforce the ban and allow the next administration figure it out. ByteDance still turned off their services to Americans, blaming the Biden admin.
And then they turned it back on, thanking Trump.
The congressional mandated ban was already in flux. The shutdown was self-imposed. This was all planned.
Maybe congress actually did have a point.

The enshittification of AI has lead to the choice of AI used by VLC to be groaned at. I even saw a post cross my feed of someone looking for a replacement for VLC.
VLC is working on on-device realtime captioning. This has nothing to do with generating images or video using AI. This has nothing to do with LLMs.
This is not generative AI.
While it would be preferred to use human generated captions for better accuracy, this is not always possible. This means a lot of video media is inaccessible to those with hearing impairment.
What VLC is doing is something that will contribute to accessibility in a big way.
AI transcription is still not perfect. It has its problems. But this is one of those things that we should be hoping to advance.
I'm not looking to replace humans in creating captions. I think we're very far from ever being able to do this correctly without humans. But as I said, there's a ton of video content that simply do not have captions available, human generated or not.
So long as they're not trying to manipulate the transcription using GenAI means, this is the wrong one to demonize.

@nprofile…6058 My dad was healthy when he caught the flu and it irreparably damaged his heart. He was on a transplant list for years after that, but did not survive. He did not see the age of 40 because of the flu.
This year will mark 30 years since his passing. I’m in my 40s now.
This is why I hate “it’s just the flu” and why I get vaccinated.

If you're surprised Tesla takes and keeps recordings from their cars after seeing the news about the Cybertruck in Vegas, you shouldn't be. This is not something new. Tesla has been taking and storing media for many years, claiming it's used to train their AI capabilities. You can't opt out either.
And Tesla employees do access it, make fun of you, make memes, and share the content internally, without any legitimate reason to access the content.

The thing to keep in mind about Large Language Models (LLMs, what people refer to as AI, currently) is even though human knowledge in the form of language is fed into them for their training, they are only storing statistical models of language, not the actual human knowledge. Their responses are constructed from statistical analysis of context of prior language used.
Any appearance of knowledge is pure coincidence. Even on the most “advanced” models.
Language is how we convey knowledge, not the knowledge itself. This is why a language model can never actually know anything.
And this is why they’re so easy to manipulate into conveying objectively false information, in some cases, maliciously so. ChatGPT and all the other big vendors do manipulate their models, and yes, in part, with malice.

The problem with this rejection isn't the whole anti-AI sentiment. Documentation exists for the humans to read and understand. Focusing on machine readability to the detriment of human understanding violates the entire purpose of having documentation in the first place.
This is an aspect of GenAI enshittification I didn't expect, to be honest.

Ugh, Home Assistant updates broke on me. I don't use https. HA is available on my internal network and via tailscale, not publicly. Yeah, still probably not great, but that's not the point.
The companion app insists it requires https, even when http is used for the URL.
Right now I can't put a valid cert in place for it. So the companion app just has to be broken for now.
Web works, at least.

Since I've been cleaning up stuff with the retirement of squirrelmob mastodon, I also took the opportunity to retune some hardware settings and clean up some long standing system errors. I also dropped various internal services I was not really using nor finding an ongoing benefit.
I need to run a new network cable across the attic at some point. Not sure when I'll get to that. I hate going into the attic.

I’ve run into a number of form fields while using Vivaldi for iPadOS that are very very slow. Most form fields are fine. These appear to be multiline form fields, and while typing out, say, a sentence, it only updates 1 character about every half second or so. As a fast typer, this means I type a sentence then wait for it to catch up, which can take over a minute sometimes.
