Hire an artist. Make it yourself. These tools were built by the very people eroding the world; built without any consideration for the harms—and in many cases built to cause harms for the benefit of the powerful.
The WPA and the Civil Rights movement moved hearts through human centered art.

Seeing a lot of convos about centralized vs. decentralized vs. distributed systems completely missing the “isolationist systems theory fallacy” present in most of these descriptions and considerations.
EX: if you build a distributed system upon software shaped and largely controlled by a centralized entity. You have not built a distributed system, merely the illusion of one.
Your “pristinely designed aquatic habitat”, is being poisoned by upstream industrial runoff.

I sometimes think about, what if websites were by every default, like podcasts? You download one, and it’s there in your little collection, on your little device. You can get a fresh copy or “pull” in an update. But largely it can’t be taken from you. It’s all this little hermetic thing.
And, yes, I know we have caching; but that’s not the same UX. That’s not holding a website like a book, being your own little Internet Archive.
I wonder how this might change what and how we create?

Legit question: if users of LLMs are supposed to “verify the results”—and that disclaimer justifies the results being inaccurate—in a world where LLMs eventually taint/replace all the results, how will these users verify the results? Through what service or method is the verification of accuracy expected to occur?

With so much lost the last ~15 years on the topic of website making I’ve seriously been considering making a book or a blog or something. Some of this still exists it’s just hard to find, but SO much is just gone, or outdated, or wrong now. MDN has on more than one occasion changed actual historical facts. And the bootcamps and acceleration programs have erased so many fundamentals in an effort to javascriptify and build-chain everything.
To build the future, we also need to remember.

My favourite thing about #uxn is that every time I look at it, despite how remarkable it is, all I can think about is building my own mini compute space. It’s good at what it does, but for me its power is in inspiring the notion that little compute spaces informed by a small perspective are possible, and should be more common.
It’s just like Morrowind in that I could never get very far in the story without starting to build mods and my own games.
It’s an uncommon metric—useful and inspiring.

The slow dehumanizing uncaring drift we’ve seen occur from author to “content creator”, has shaped a world where the “content” matters most, where the person is ignored and unsupported. And once they’re just a “content creator” they no longer have any value in being human. A machine “content creator”, a generative model, becomes easy to accept and reach for. And the process of severing author from material is complete. Only the content remains, any route of support to the creator is now gone.

I fear the future of the web is a division between two philosophies. That it is a place where people go to find things made by people who care OR that it is a slowly stagnating database to be queried, mined, and deconstructed so that a person can be given something generated by a machine run by people who don’t care at all (except for money).
The further we let the line between author and material drift the more we get just “content”. And the closer we get to the second nightmare.

In a world where volunteer driven sharing exists in an attempt to contrast the operations of capitalistic/self-ish greed can the former ever overtake the latter if the latter can exploit the efforts of sharing and recapture its efforts by simply taking what is already freely given, shared, or available?
It begins to feel very much like the Tolerance Paradox which has one solution of: “only those abiding by tolerance, can be beneficiaries of that tolerance”.
Which undermines limitless “Open”.

I’m just one little person, but feels to me like one way to show solidarity to all the negatively threatened artists across industries is to STOP playing with the current batch of generative models, stop putting it in your work, stop baking it into things, stop sharing the funny/cute/weird outputs. Stop giving it oxygen.
All the major models are built on extractive exploitation, with zero consideration of systemic harm. All designed absent the “should” and only caring about the “could”.
