Today was the last session of my “digital tools in religious studies” course, and students presented their (work in progress) final projects. Most managed to do really well, but some blew my mind. I decidedly made this a tools class, not an intro to programming, to lower the barriers. At some point, they figured out they’d need python to do what they wanted, so they just went ahead and learned it on their own using StackOverflow and ChatGPT. 🤯 I’m so proud! #DigitalHumanities #ReligiousStudies

Und zu denken, das könne in IT-Diensten aufgehen, ist, sagen wir mal, interessant. Ich befürchte, letztlich spielt auch eine Menge anti-geisteswissenschaftliches Ressentiment rein. Now that I’m following the #DH2023 remotely this year, it really hurts to see how fractured our community is across platforms. Also before Elmo blew a hole into our infrastructure, not everybody was on Twitter, but many were. I’m mainly on Mastodon this year, and I was hoping it would work as a new home for the #DH community. It kind of does, I really enjoy the conversations with many of our peers here, and I don’t want to spend more time over there. But here as there, it’s just shards left.

Aaaargh, I know I brought this onto myself, but collaborating with others on office documents as a #Linux user still is a pain. Need to review a document, but in #LibreOffice, the footnotes are simply empty from a certain point, and #OnlyOffice fails to load the images (and save the doc). #MSOffice365 online is not available at the university. Now what? 😩

@npub1n5r…33s8 Now I realize that the underlying issue is using "farsi" instead of "persian" as a language name. This was very recently (as in: two months ago) added to babel as an alias, but using "persian" seems to be the safe thing to do for now.

I think my question is _which_ package exactly do I have to `tlmgr install` in order to get Persian language support. Usually, there’s the `babel-*` packages, but there’s no `babel-persian` or `babel-farsi`. (Also, I can’t ditch pandoc, because LaTeX is only one of the output formats.)

The main reason I want to make the switch to babel is that @npub1t3x…dsqp made it, and that’s what we actually use to generate #TeXLaTeX. The general mechanism works fine, but my main problem is that I don’t know how to install the Persian language support with #tlmgr (which is also what #Pandoc is using in its Docker container).

I've got a weird #TeXLaTeΧ question and I'm curious if #AskFedi can help: I want to typeset #Persian text, but when I try to load #farsi with #babel, I get an "There is no ini file for the requested language" message. The babel GitHub repo has babel-fa.ini, and it's in texlive-latex-base, but I can't find a way to install it into my minimal system with tlmgr, since CTAN has no babel-farsi or babel-persian package. Any ideas?

Really interesting discussion at the #4CultureBarcamp: Whatever CC BY or similar license you’re attaching to your digital #CulturalHeritage reproduction is most probably making an unjustified legal claim. Because CC BY+ are based on copyright, but a faithful reproduction of a public domain work does not constitute a copyrightable work. So PD Mark would actually be the correct thing to do. @npub1cwx…rh4u Right, the panels parameter should work just fine, and it's probably what expert users would use. I think there's still a benefit of pre-defined combinations of tools for specific purposes, especially for beginners who struggle with choosing from the variety of tools. But having to tweak a URL parameter kind of defeats that purpose.
