Two posts were listed right next to each other in the explore/trending section today.
First, a post with photos of Nikki Haley signing artillery shells in Israel. I thought photos had to be fake. Nope, they're real.
Next post was about the impact the classic 2018 essay by Adam Serwer (The Cruelty Is the Point) had on that poster.
It's hard to come up with a more cruel example than literally signing bombs that will kill children.
I can't stop crying. 😢

I went on a short walk in the park and used my Merlin app a few times. It identified a "new" bird (meaning new to me!) today, the Pacific wren.
Years ago I would have called it a winter wren but I guess those two are now considered different species.
Anyway, it's always lovely to listen to their song. They can be quite loud for such a small bird! Unlike, say, the brown creeper which is another bird that I heard today.

I thought I'd add that I signed up for this program myself. I'm on Medicare due to disability. The signup process was pretty easy.
After I signed up I requested some free COVID tests. They sent Lucira brand which tests for COVID and Influenza A and B.

I hate twice yearly clock changes in the USA 😠 I envy folks in Hawaii & Arizona!
That said, a few years ago my husband and I decided to keep our sleep/wake times the same time year round, e.g., sleep at about 10 PM during standard time and 11 PM during DST.
Best decision we ever made!
Highly recommended if you can figure out a schedule that works for you! 😁 I'm disabled, he's retired, so we aren't constrained by work hours and meetings.

As a software engineer who was once told that I should "smile more" during a performance review, I completely agree.
Ironically, I'm was quite friendly with my team! Even arranged some of the team parties. We got along well.
The comment arose because when I walked down the hall I was often deep in thought, trying to solve some problem. I did not greet or smile at the management folks as they walked by. It never occurred to me that this was an important part of my job.

Another thing I noticed is that now I can't click on hashtags on disabled.social when I'm not logged in. That used to work on this server before the update.
I don't know whether it's related to search being disabled but it's sad to lose this feature.

Hi,
Maybe I'm doing something wrong but it looks like search is not available on our server. Is that correct?
I think the search feature is opt-in so I was hoping it would be available after the upgrade.
I have a lot of cognitive issues so being able to search for posts (mostly my own!) would help me a lot.
Any info you can give me would help but there's no hurry. Thanks!

Thanks for posting that link!
It was good to learn that most voters support adding more accessible voting options for elected officials with disabilities (see attached image). Old fashioned rules requiring in-person voting should be modified.

I joined mastodon.social because of someone I knew. Then I moved to disabled.social - better fit and some folks I know are here.
In fact, I joined twitter in 2007 because someone I knew was using it.
I'm less likely to join a brand new service if I don't know anyone who has an account on it *and* I don't know anything about the servers / people who use them.
