The creepiest conference I ever attended wasn't a cybersecurity conference with some leet new hacking tools. It was an educational data mining conference back when I was still doing AI work.
I sat in a room with maybe a hundred people and listened to a panel of data miners bemoan the fact they couldn't have biometric sensors strapped to kids 24/7 so they could study all of the physiological responses to education/educational environments over the court of the day. There was no sense that the children deserved any kind of privacy.
I think about this conference *a lot*. It's one of the reasons I got out of AI back in the early 2010s and shifted focus into security.

I've been thinking about how much time and effort went into selecting XZ as a target. It probably wouldn't be that hard to create a tool which searched the most commonly used open source projects and sorted them by the number of active maintainer.
