Third, we are away of an issue affecting Fedora Atomic Desktops.
If you have updated recently you may not be able to boot, getting a message about a bad shim signature or something similar. The Fedora Atomic Desktops SIG is aware of the issue and working on a solution. It seems to be related to the update to Linux kernel 6.9. (1/2)

We've heard positive experiences with Fedora MATE even in the Fedora 40 release. Still using Anaconda. The feedback we've heard is that Fedora MATE is able to be spun up to point of daily driving, so it seems unaffected by the problem that affected Workstation.

We are aware of the unfortunate issue with the screen reader for installs in Fedora 40. That should be fixed for Fedora 41 and future, but there are challenges with getting it resolved in current isos.
That issue has prompted more collaboration from the Accessibility Working Group with our Quality Team (this test week is the first step in that). We're also working to communicate more downstream and with our edition/spin working groups.

Nailed it. In this example, if you're on Fedora 40 you know that you have one month after the release of Fedora 42 to upgrade and stay on a supported version. That's why 13 months to give a little extra time.
What some people do is hang back one major release. So if you start with Fedora 40, skip Fedora 41 and only upgrade to F41 once F42 release. That way you're still getting new stuff to you every 6 months, but it's 6 months after it's been out in the wild.

if you're looking for a home server solution, CoreOS may be a better fit since it still uses rpm-ostree but may not be so focused on the IoT use case in it's configuration.

when you install Fedora IoT you're starting with a base image. When you update Fedora IoT, a new image will download. The "update" is that rpm-ostree will now boot off the new image you just installed instead of the image you were previously using.

Fedora IoT 40 got some cool under-the-hood changes. :fedora_iot:
First is that Fedora IoT now uses the unified core model, making them the last rpm-ostree variant to make the switch.

Second is that Fedora IoT will be the first rpm-ostree variant to be a bootable container image. You will literally be swapping to newer and newer container images when you update rather than managing independent packages and dependencies.

Silverblue and Fedora Atomic users - here's a guide on how to rebase to Fedora 40.
The graphical example used is for Silverblue, but if you follow the terminal instructions they will work on any Fedora Atomic Desktop. Just pay attention to use the name of your variant where applicable.
If anything goes bad, you can rollback to Fedora 39. Additionally you can pin your current image if you need to go back after a few updates.
