Increasingly feeling the urge to host my new server at home, rather than in the cloud.
Main blocker is the upfront expense: I'd need to buy the hardware, find a place for it, and connect it. I'd still need a (small) box in the cloud to act as a public face for it, 'cos I don't have a static IP at home, nor IPv6.

Also of interest: 38C3 ended on Prickle-Prickle, the 72th day of The Aftermath, 3190 YOLD. I think that's fitting.

How about adding "don't send AI spam" to my email in the free plan?
Looks like there's a setting where I can unsubscribe from promotional material.... one I never enabled, but now opted out. I have absolutely no illusions about it having any effect - I'll be spammed with bullshit regardless, I'm sure.

Whenever I fork a repo on #GitHub, I feel dirty. Not just because I'm visiting GitHub, but because I need to fork in the first place to be able to open a pull request.
On #Codeberg (and other #Forgejo instances), I can just clone, and use AGit to open a pull request, without the need to fork.
It is so much more convenient that way. And I don't need to remember to delete the fork once my PR has been dealt with, either!

Apropos on mastodon handles being "confusing", because the same username on different instances might be a different person: this reminded me of a funny scenario way back in the early 2000s.
The stage: Entrance to a server park.
Present: The guard, and a group of four young nerds.
To enter the facility, the young nerds have to show their IDs to the guard, and sufficient documentation to prove they can enter. Our group of nerds first show the proof, then start showing their government issued IDs.
"Gergely Nagy", reads the first. Guard looks at him, picture looks valid: "go ahead".
"Gergely Nagy", reads the second. The guard looks at him funny, but lets him pass.
"Gergő Nagy" (editor's note: Gergő is a nickname for Gergely, but also a name on its own). The guard is getting irritated, "You've got to be kidding me!", and calls their boss listed on the proof document. Boss chuckles, and confirms the names are correct, it's not a prank. "Fine, go ahead", the guard sighs.
"Gergely Nagy", the last reads. Loud cursing ensues from the Guard's part, and the group of nerds are trying very, very hard not to fall down and roll on the floor laughing their ass off.
Funny thing is, none of us met the others before, and we have not met since. But on that day, at that time, we were there together, sent by four different companies, to deal with the same task together. None of the companies knew ahead of time who the others were sending.

@nprofile…ss2n The way I solved this - with sops-nix - is that I put the private host key in a sops-protected file, and configured sops to allow decrypting it with either the ssh host key itself, or my own age key.
Thus, I could - temporarily - lift it out when I bootstrapped the host, and once bootstrapped (with nixos-anywhere), it's stored on the host, outside of the nix store.
If I need to bring up a new VM, or a fresh install, I'll inject the host key out of band.

I see another @nprofile…q5wq book kickstarter, I press support (or rather, "notify me on launch" in this case). I'm a simple, flawed man: I enjoy the macabre, the irredeemable, the absolute worst junk written in an eloquently verbose style filled with irony and loathing, the twisted erotic unix encounter, the weird, the strange, the unlovable (please underline all that apply).
I'm also not very big on obeying authority, and He said "don't support this". Oh hell no, you're not telling ME what to do!
Yes, yes, reverse psychology, etc, etc. Don't care. Lalalalala. Give me more unhinged stuff to read, thanks. If it costs him his dignity, even better. :flan_evil:
