Kind of an interesting difference between my Bluesky and Mastodon feeds regarding recent Bluesky announcements.
Mastodon is focused purely on the “blockchain investment” announcement but my Bluesky feed is focused almost exclusively on the “funding through subscriptions” announcement.
And of course my Mastodon feed is being negative while my Bluesky feed is being positive about the respective news they focus on

@npub1238…g63g True, iPhone Mirroring is one of the few features I’ve seen people talk about without complaints. I wonder if it was helped by not really being impacted by the pivot to Apple Intelligence (which it sounds like drained most resources over the past year)

Maybe I’m just noticing the negative more, but I can’t remember an Apple release cycle where I’ve seen so much negativity around the software changes (bad design, lots of bugs, etc) and next to nothing positive being said

@npub1src…fms4 Should be compiled to a library and included in each Swift release (and utterly bizarre to me that it still isn’t). There is zero reason for 99.9% of people who use swift-syntax to compile it

I’ve posted it a few times today but I feel like it should be an even bigger deal: the UK shut down its last coal-fired power station today. We were the first country to fire one up, and now we’re the first major economy to shut them all down.
And the key thing is, it happened quickly.
2012: generated 40% of power from coal
2018: first coal-free day in over a century
2020: months on end with no coal
2024: last station closed

@npub1src…fms4 I think the best advice I heard is “turn it on, fix what you can, then turn it off and wait until next year once there’s been 12 months of fixes and improvements”

Intel should really be considered a disaster on par with Boeing in terms of highlighting the problems of sticking “business” people in charge of engineering companies.
Few, if any, of the problems are Gelsinger’s fault, they’re a result of a decade of chasing profits over truly innovating

Woo! Just found the chemo did its job, so I’m moving into the next stage of treatment: surgery to remove the tumour (and thus cure me, at least in theory)

@npub1utv…87lr Unfortunately that led to a new CTO coming in who didn’t really know about or care for native apps, so pushed for electron rewrites, at which point some of the engineering org was let go (most of the contractors, including myself) and a lot of the rest left very soon after.
Felt very much a case of, if they had the right timeframe for their expectations, it could have become a perfectly profitable business, but VCs gonna VC 🤷‍♂️

@npub1utv…87lr When I was there initially there was a lot of “build new products” rather than focusing purely on the core app. Then it pivoted (correctly IMO) into build up the business tools to help bring in more revenue.
Unfortunately expectations of revenue seemed to be a bit out of whack for what the initial steps were, so there were cut backs and some higher ups left

@npub1utv…87lr Really sad to see. We had some amazing product teams when I was working for them who really cared about improving the app in many ways. Then things sort of fell apart around the time that I left. 😕
