@nprofile…djep Quando era mais nova tinha esta ideia que, quando fosse adulta, estariamos a viver uma época progressista e informada em que estes atos brutais e episódios como o que se seguiu, perteceriam a um passado mais ou menos distante... era mesmo ingénua.
Imfelizmente o mal nunca sai de moda...

This is a huge reality check for me.
This situation asks for a long reflexion, on values and on what people perceive as important, and what are their priorities.
And @nprofile…7c02 you know what?
We are not free from this happening in our countries. Good people have to be alert and combative.

And you kwow what's astonishing?
In Portugal in the 80's we were in the first years of democracy.
The country was very poor, under developed (we had a dictatorship that lasted for 41 years and ended in1974).
In 1978, 80% of the people were illiterate. 80 % of the portuguese didn't know how to read or write.

We had a very young, fragile and ferociously poor democracy.

These people didn't know to read or write, they survived a dictatorship, and still never doubted the power of medicine (and in a way science).
I remember the 80's. I was 10 in 84. In school I was the weird one, (not only but also) because I didn't go to church, didn't do the catechism, my mother drove a car. And (oh my God!) we had a color TV?!
I dont understand, I really don't. Where in time this distrust in science, this lack of good sense, irrationality start? Why this blind distrust in institutions? And more importantly how to reverse this mentally?
Such a rich country, not only material richness. Scientific, artistic, natural richness. This wonderful country... broken.

I have to tell you, I'm new in #Mastodon. I'm a month old baby, or less.
I tried Facebook back in...2000 and litle, Instagram in 2012 or 2016, dont know for sure, twitter... even X. Made the accounts and visited once or twice...it never felt like .... me...
I'm really greatfull for this platform. It feels real.
There's humor that it's very needed these days. Civilised conversations, solidarity, discussions based on facts (that are so important). And most of all good people who care. People from all over the world, people that I feel very connected with, because of our intrinsically will to be better for themselves and others and for the future of the planet. Western values are not dead and even if you are not my neighbours in my town. You are in my planet..

Thanks to our national vaccination program. Measles, Rubella, Raebis, Smallpox, Polio and Diphtheria have been eradicated in Portugal. This is not exclusive to Portugal as you can see in https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11359695/
Between the years of 2011 and 2014, we had 8 cases of Measles in Portugal and all imported by people from other countries.
Serves as an example of exactly the opposite of what #Antivaccine movement is saying.
