I feel bad that I just now told my sister I'm moving away. A week after signing the lease. It was a hard decision. And I didn't relish telling her. She took it well, but I know she would prefer that I stay closer. I would prefer that too if rent wasn't so crazy in Orlando. She was kind, though, and said that I may even decide I want to come back. So, it wasn't a door slam moment. Life is uncertain and hard sometimes.

One reason I am not surprised by the flavor and fervor of this recent wave of extreme #Christiannationalism is that I attended a conservative seminary earlier in my adult life. I was more of a moderate believer but didn't find an educational outlet where I lived with my then-husband. I could not believe such literal Biblical interpretations of laws and prophesies in Biblical texts. The students were worse than the profs and I don't doubt that some may have stormed the US capitol.

Maybe I reveal too much in my posts here, lols. But then I go over to #Facebook where it feels more surface-like, whereas on #Mastodon, I don't sense that very much. On Facebook, I am now "friends" with people I don't know because they friended me through my friends and not because we interacted about anything. I'm in South Carolina where my sister and I are helping my dad prepare for Mom's "Celebration of Life" service. Family is coming in the next few days as well as people from my father's old church in Florida where he was a minister. My son, niece, and nephew will be here. I'm so grateful they are coming. This is something we don't want to talk about: How do you mourn a parent who was abusive. One part of you feels sad, another part feels relieved, another part feels guilty you feel relieved. When people speak in unrealistic, glowing terms about the deceased--including the parent married to the abuser--you feel angry, then you feel guilty you're angry, then you feel like it could have been worse. And it's intolerable when there's a religious overlay. I'll stop. I just feel anxious.

I thought I would be vulnerable and share a photo of my sister and me at her graduation ceremony last weekend. She now has a Masters in Counseling. The graduates were given the chance to hand out a "stole of gratitude" to a family member(s) who had supported them while they pursued their studies. My sister gave one to me and one to my niece.

Sometimes you have to remember that it isn't normal that individual needs go ignored when you're in a grandiose narcissist's family. One is subsumed in the narrative that is often larger than life, grandiose, super-spiritual. While there are end-of-life plans for some to be buried together, there may be no mention of others, where they will be buried, what will happen to them. The physical more granular details are eschewed for a story of glory. I am mourning Mom, but hoping I maintain sanity.

It has been meaningful to me to have made friends on #mastodon I have been through some changes and have found a way to be honest about certain aspects of my life. Thank you for your feedback and support. My sister and I will be taking a long trip home later today. We are likely saying goodbye to our mother before we leave as she is in the end stage of #Alzheimer's. She isn't able to eat, and her blood pressure is extremely low. We have been able to talk through final arrangements with Dad.

I've learned from experience that death and tragedy do not change the dynamics of a family system entrenched in narcissism and conservative religious beliefs. As much as I want the Hallmark movie ending, I do not hold illusions. Sometimes I think Hollywood does us no favors. Then again, we have darker literature and movies which deal with certain realities often swept away by those in a triumphant religion. My sister and I are with my Mom and Dad for a long weekend. My Mom is going through the end-of-life transition with #Alzheimer's. She isn't eating, but she's managing to be busy with the help of nurses and family. We even helped her walk a little bit outside today. Dad has a hospital bed for her, and she is on meds to help her feel more comfortable. Nurses are here 24/7. Her awareness is pretty sharp even if she can't always communicate. We leave on Monday. 💔

Things are happening much faster than anticipated for my Mom who has Alzheimer's. My Dad took her to the memory care center today where he was going to start the process of enrolling her, but she collapsed there, and actually had collapsed a few days ago also when they were at church. She also hasn't been eating. They were able to check her out at the memory care center and it looks like the decision is to begin hospice. My sister and I will be driving up soon.

I wonder if writers believe their writing seem more literary--think Raymond Carver, et al--when in fact all they risk is bewildering readers by not grounding scenes with details of setting. The problem worsens when multiple scenes are depicted in a shorter piece. The reader has no sense of the geographic locale of the dialogue and feels like they are on a hallucinatory trip with only scraps of disembodied speech. I use whatever struggles I might have gone through or am going through currently as part of my fiction writing, either directly or indirectly. I don't always. It also depends on my mood. I just write what I feel led to write at the moment and in the way I need to write it. I feel guilty when I've exposed someone to my writing when unbeknownst to me, they would have preferred something lighter. I do provide content warnings. It makes me feel alone sometimes. I may give up altogether on groups.

Last night, young kids showed up in force not far from where I live to attend a vigil, many from Latin American families, to mourn the death of a girl who went missing this past week. The child's mother's boyfriend was arrested as a proven suspect, caught on video. @npub1lyr…k7hs @npub1q32…xgsx @npub1cz0…wk5s @npub1wu7…3d23 @npub1l7u…cn2r I think in smaller pieces these days, which is why I'm hoping to form longer works from small chapters, something like novels-in-flash. I don't outline, but different "chapters" seem to suggest themselves as I finish each one. The beauty of that sometimes is that you really can rearrange sections if they are more or less independent. Various pieces can occur at different places in time, and it works out in the end. I like reading work like that too.

It's interesting how you can come across a venue, a journal, a writer, a workshop and think "My writing may not be as bad as I thought." I think this points to the importance of protecting oneself as a writer because in writing, particularly creative writing, vulnerability in the act of writing is important. Then it becomes important to determine at what stages various folk get to see what pieces. #writing #writingcommunity #writers #creativeprocess #creative

@npub1lzz…jhl3 Yes, it's interesting that abortion was not a thing for evangelicals. Thank you for filling me in on this bit of history. I hadn't realized your academic background, though we have shared some thoughts about this troubling church/state monolith. I grew up Presbyterian and attended a conservative Baptist seminary, but also an MFA program based in Catholic aesthetics. Anyway, thank you for your post and response. It is helpful to hear from someone who has expertise in this area.
