Hi folks we've been experiencing some disruptions over the past couple days as we've been working to mitigate against an attacker who found and exploited a vulnerability in our system that allowed them to get password reset codes for accounts that didn't belong to them.
Using this exploit they were able to gain access to a number of accounts that they shouldn't have had access to and withdraw funds.
We've patched the issue and believe we've revoked the attacker's access to the compromised accounts by invalidating their JWT authentication tokens and NWC secrets.
We've instituted system-wide withdrawal limits as a precautionary measure while we work to fully restore and migrate the payment records of affected accounts.
If you are seeing a blank screen when you visit the Coinos site, you may need to visit https://coinos.io/logout or clear your browser cache. If you have Coinos installed as a PWA you may need to uninstall it and re-add it to your homescreen.
About 80 accounts had their passwords reset by the attacker but only a handful were actively stolen from. If your account was compromised you may be missing some recent transactions. We do have backups and will be writing scripts to find and restore those payment records over the coming days.
If you were using Coinos via NWC your NWC connection string secret may have changed in which case you will need to re-connect Coinos to your Nostr apps.
We'll be reverting unsolicited withdrawals and covering all losses ourselves to make all our users whole. Thankfully we caught the attack relatively quickly and managed to take corrective action before the attacker had time to fully drain our wallets.
Coinos is essentially a volunteer effort and one-man show on the tech front so please be patient as it's going to take me a few days to restore everything back to normal.
This incident has not shaken my resolve, only strengthened it.

We need to fix that. You should be able to import your key if you want but it's not necessary for zaps/NWC to work. It only matters if you want to have the same follows/followers show up within coinos. We're planning to let people sync their keys with an external browser extension or signer app like Amber soon so you won't need to provide your secret key directly.

We do support on-chain sending and receiving in addition to lightning, e-cash, and Liquid. Swaps are done implicitly at the time of sending so no matter how you deposited you can send out over any of those methods and it'll just work. We charge 0.1% for all swaps.

There's no hard limit but we discourage anyone from storing large amounts of funds with us. Coinos is intended as an easy onboarding wallet and daily spending wallet, not for savings or long term investments. We try to keep about 0.5 BTC available at any given time to service withdrawals server-wide. On busy days or for larger amounts you may need to wait for us to move funds from cold storage or give notice ahead of time. That's not a guarantee, just a guideline.

Thanks for the feedback. We haven't changed the default to sats (yet) because a lot of small businesses using our app expect to be able to enter values in their local fiat currency.
But we have just gone ahead and made the setting persist in your browser local storage now so at least now if you change to sats it will stick with that until you change it back rather than defaulting back to fiat all the time.

Yeah we don't see eye to eye here. We offer a way for merchants to get on board and start transacting instantly and freely with no KYC. Yes it's custodial but they have the option to withdraw to self-custody at any time. We even let them automate that by setting a balance threshold so if they reach more than $100 or whatever amount they choose it auto-withdraws to an on-chain bitcoin address they provide. So think of us as a batching service that scales bitcoin by allowing people to do thousands of transactions at no cost off the blockchain and only settle periodically to secure their bags.
Custodial lightning offers a super friendly way to get bitcoin into the hands of non-technical people without bombarding them with details about seed phrases, key management or channel liquidity considerations. Once they accumulate a meaningful amount they can go down the path of setting up cold storage and taking custody when it suits them.
