It's been over a month since I've posted to Mastodon. Most days, I check in and read a few posts, but my engagement has been limited.
There are some things I miss about being more active. I've also exprienced some relief at getting away from the negativity and constant competition to be the most critical person on the block.
I think the thing I miss most is the opportunity to express myself in small ways each day on topics I don't usually get to talk about.

I am not an NYT hater. I very much appreciate much of what they do, even when I disagree.
But, I think today's edition of The Daily, titled "AI's Original Sin" was very problematic. Over 50% of the way into the show, their coverage was very biased in favor of arguments that they are suing OpenAI for - without disclosing or mentioning their lawsuit.
In the second half of the show, the mentioned their lawsuit and brought a bit of balance to the story, but not much.

I was trying to find the "cancel" option for my Peacock subscription and getting quite frustrated. It seemed that they did such a good job hiding the account settings.
After several attempts, I was ready to come to social media and vent this frustration, when I found it in a pretty logical and obvious location.

It was a great evening for taking Drone photos. Nice lighting and an interesting mix of snow, ice, and open water.
These are conditions that only come along once or twice a year, if that.

You are correct that this phenomenon extends to most other topics on social media. But, an AI post was what triggered me yesterday and venting seems like the popular thing to do here.

The larger the project, the more likely that some folks are going to have bad experiences.
We should try to learn from those bad experiences without assuming they are the norm.
I have no personal experience contributing to Mastodon, so I don't know what the "average" new contributor experiences.

At an open source conference this weekend and talking to folks about the different experiences that people report about the community. While some folks report a cliquish and closed core team that make it difficult to contribute, others are glowing in their praise about how welcoming and open the community is and supportive of new contributions.
Both of these experiences are probably accurate, but demonstrate how individual milage varies. So many factors.

I didn't expect you to try. The fact that you did try, is impressive.
The Cuyuna hashtag is generous. I consider #Cuyuna to be a region (although there is also a town by that name) and this photo is really a bit outside of the region. So, it's not a deliberate red herring, but it's also not that useful.
This photo is within about a 15 mile radius of the city of Cuyuna.
Do you really think that this photo is possible?

The reason I think about this is that sometimes I'm posting photos of someone's house or barn. I don't really want to give the world the geo coordinates of that structure I'm photographing.
On the other hand, I don't necessarily assume that someone with the time and resources couldn't find the location of the image.
I just think it's my responsibility to NOT make it easy for them.

Looking at the photo again, with the water tower and the building just beyond, makes this a pretty easy one to place.

I was under the impression that Mastodon removed the geo coordinates from photos automatically.
I assume that is what you used to geolocate the photo.
I never tested the theory. Just accepted what someone told me a long time ago.

All photos in #Drones4Fun have been shot with DJI drones. Either a Mini 2 or Air 3.
I shoot in RAW and process them with #DarkTable (#FOSS). I'm getting better at the photo processing, but still very much a student.
I recently printed out some images that seem to look good on the screen, only to find the prints a little less satisfying. So, still learning.
I try to post images that are relatively recently taken, for example within 1-3 weeks. Sometimes I am excited and post on same day.

Bluesky pays it bills with VC money, which of course is not and is not intended to be a long term solution.
Mastodon and the Fediverse pay their bills with volunteer labor and donations. I'm a bit suspicious that is a viable long term solution.
In either case, I thinks it's reasonable to speculate that eventually things will have to change and either performance/quality will degrade or a new source of income will need to be found.

I just finished "True Dectectives: The Night Country." I thought it was interesting and worth watching.
I loved seeing Jodi Foster again, but I'm not sure this is her best work, or maybe I just didn't fully get her character.
Don't overthink the plot. Just enjoy the mood and characters.

I'm not surprised they are trying this. I'll be a bit surprised if it works and they are still doing it 2-3 years from now.
Seems to me like the kind of change that consumers may not accept. We'll see...
