A couple of things you can do on the potatoes:
Make sure they're in light to enhance the sprouting process
Cut them into pieces that have 2-3 eyes per piece. This will give you more to seed from and focus the growth for the potato

Yeah, that was (and still sort of is) me. I hate processing our meat birds. It's not the plucking or gutting or anything, I do that no problem. It's the killing part. I blame society (and to some extent my parents) for making me weak. But I still do it because it's part of nature and I know I need to get over it and be stronger.
But it still sucks.

Yeah, it's a blessing and a curse. They like to go broody, which means they're great at hatching new birds. The only problem is they don't lay when they're broody...
Also, if you're going to be hatching your own, make sure you have a plan for roos.
More than one and they're just useless weight that will fight, over hump your hens, and generally be a pain in the ass. So be prepared to deal with them.

So you will need something to keep them in (a brooder). This can be a simple plastic tub, some pet/farm stores sell little walls you can put up to keep them in area, you can build a simple wood structure, whatever works for you.
You'll need bedding. We use yellow pine chips, but you can use newspaper or straw bedding.
Of course you'll need a watered and a feeder as well as chick feed.
The most important part is going to be a heat lamp and something to securely hang it in. New chicks are very susceptible to the cold and it can kill them quickly.
That's about it. Keep in mind that whatever you put them in will eventually need a top as they'll outgrow it and start jumping out well before they're ready to go outside 😆.
Keep them warm, fed, and watered, and play with them alot so they become familiar with you.

Some blackberry jam to go along with the raspberry jam. The blackberry plants are putting the poor raspberries to shame. Proximity to the chicken coops is probably a notable factor. The blackberries have a pretty rich, constant source of nutrients.

Nah, there is plenty of time (unless you're up north... then yeah....). Plenty of stuff (bush beans, peas, brussels) that you can get in the ground that should make it.
Hell, get and area prepped for some winter wheat or garlic here in a few months 😀 ).

Yeah, I've heard a lot about basil and oregano being good pest repellents. I need to remember to plant some around things next year and see what happens.
What's funny is I had a pot of basil on the deck and and it was constantly covered in Japanese beetles. Mayne it's more of a trap crop?

Yeah, surprisingly fewer bugs this year. Usually we lose a bunch to worms, but not so far this year. I'll chalk it up to the neem oil (so I can justify the money I spent on it and the sprayer to myself).
We also left a few ears hanging to harvest for seed. Hopefully the damn birds leave it be.

Ah, I'm on the fence about getting a miter saw too. I thought that my table saw would be the answer to cutting laps and whatnot, and it works great as long as the piece isn't huge.
I'm thinking of getting a DeWalt sliding saw, hoping maybe it will help with joints, plus easier crosscut and angles. I'm kind of afraid it'll make me regret buying the table saw...

Corn is a PitA... its very hungry and water loving. Make sure to fertilize it heavily. Do you plant in a square or rectangle? Pollination can cause issues with size and development as well.

Noticed an interesting little thing going on this morning with the bees. They're very clean creatures and spend a lot of time throwing waste out of the hive, including the remains of their dead brothers and sisters. Usually they dump them right off of the entrance of the hive to the ground about 18" below, where I noticed they had some helpers in their clean up efforts: ants. When the bees drop a dead body below the ants come along and start dismantling the bodies for food. Just noticed it and thought it was interesting.

I mean, the IT world runs on VMs. I can say that I run huge, high IOPs/throughput workloads on VMs, so virtualization wouldn't be the bottleneck, unless the backend infrastructure just suck of the VMs are misconfigured.
You should be able to get on your VMs and see if you've got high storage latency (ie: more than a few ms), high CPU util, CPU I/O waits, memory utilization issues or whatever.
Sorry, not trying to be a pest, this is just fun to talk about.

Hrm... I'll look into that. I've definitely fertilized (rabbit manure and they're also near the chicken run), but the acidic part I've not looked into. I need to find a decent quality soil test kit I guess... its one area that I've definitely been lacking in checking.

I mean, a container is just virtualization of the app instead of at the OS layer. If you can spin up a container vs a VM, you're not saving yourself a huge amount of resources outside of what the OS uses (which is pretty small on the Linux side). Granted, containerization makes spinning new apps up faster across multiple systems, but I'm not sure what you really gain at this scale.
Not saying not to learn it, always expand your knowledge base. But you can run multiple apps on the same VM like you can run multiple containers on the same host system as well. Not sure why you'd run more VMs vs containers? (Speaking from a point of ignorance on how your environment is set up or what your host/provider offers)
