She was the first woman and Black person to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone. Queers loved her for giving a 🖕 to a misogynist music industry and her abusive husband. She was close friends with other icons like Cher and Bowie. She performed at the opening of the first Gay Games and spoke out for people living with HIV at a time when it could kill your career. Drag queens emulated her style and sang her songs. Modern queer icons do too.

Some thoughts about #fullsearch of federated-with instances. 🧵 1/2
1. Conflating any ill will you have with Supernovae at #Universeodon, with the issue of search indexing on the Fediverse to justify your fediblock won't help resolve the issues around search.
2. It isn't global search. While we shout, lock down, and don't participate in building the additions to our protocols that the #Fediverse needs, we've been letting #Google index the Fediverse. It's already searchable and Google's new Perspectives tab is going to make it even easier. Maybe we could fight that rather than keep thinking it doesn't exist and continuing to write ineffective Facebook-viral style "I do not give permission..." copypasta?
3. The #Fediverse does not respect your do-not-index-my-posts flag. It never has. It can't. It's not supported by the #Mastodon API, as @supakaity@blahaj.zone explains, and nor is it supported at #ActivityPub level and will need to be added into a new AP protocol.
Every instance server from the #Misskey (#Calckey, #Foundkey), #Pleroma (#Akkoma), and #Friendica (#Hubzilla, #Streams) lineages has full search of federated-with instances as default. All these services actually pre-date the creation of Mastodon in 2016 you can read @Polychrome@poly.cyber.city 's post for their commentary on such. Fediblock all of them to create your very own #Mastoverse or you could become part of building a better, safer, Fediverse? Perhaps through participating in the Fediverse Enhancement Proposals? #FEP

@npub1wxx…3adn I think whatever we become we'll really only have 'succeeded' if #Calckey leads the way with #FediverseSafety ahead of features and scale.
The Calckey I see would
- have a diverse team of folks that has the time to listen to the safety discourses, and the lived experience to know why safety matters, and informs their #development decisions.
- make importing #blocklists or integrating third party #moderation tools easypeasy, so no user finds themselves on an new server that's open to dogpiled by the worst elements of the #Fediverse.
- have robust #accessibility features that are as important to promote as #quoteposts and #MFM.
- have granular user controls for #safety - opt-in & opt-out; and features - like turning down/off MFM when it's overwhelming without a user needing to resort to CSS scripts.
- not really care to be a birdsite or #Mastodon alternative. Let's work to be a better secret third thing, or fourth, or fifth thing.
If we really have to duplicate the big influencer account thing, I'd like to see more non-White, autistic, disabled, queers, and women voices. They're here, but they're often forced to be critics of a newer hegemony. Let's be listening for how can Calckey become the main service of choice for Black, POC and Indigenous women to join, spin up servers, become developers, and have prominent voices on. The rest of the good stuff will follow that.
I think we can do that, but only if we prioritise, and promote minority voices, and do the structural work to support them coming to the service.

On May 6, 1933, a Nazi student group marched to the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin. With members of the SA, they ransacked the institute and looted its library and archives. Days later, the stolen books, artifacts, and clinical files were destroyed in one of several public book burnings organized across Germany. A bust of Hirschfeld was paraded through the streets on a stick before being thrown onto the bonfire.

The examples I've given aren't about marginalised folx being put behind CW. They're about marginalised folx asking people to put CWs on news and commentary about folx who hate & murder those folx. I'm sorry, but it's been black and #trans folks asking white and cis folx to stick that stuff behind a CW. It is fucking traumatic to see that stuff and barely have a chance to scroll by. @npub1pqk…z65u It hasn't been about abuse of QTs, mostly because the crowd are the tinkerer crowd; but the lack of mods - perhaps you need a mod broadcast account - being in the timeline to say "hey we CW that here" when folks are talking breaking news about politics, that Fox guy getting sacked, or the young black man who was murdered on the subway, is what visible, active moderation is all about.
As a trans person I had to get out out of there when the timeline devolved into Fox guy talk. And some folks there were posting last night (my time) that they were distressed that most users weren't CWing when posting their takes on the chokehold killing of a black man. If you want to rail against mastodon.social poisoning #Fediverse social culture, there's a start right there.

@npub1eqg…3p9k @npub1grx…uxfe It's still only getting half of it right if #calckey is gonna be a voice for decentralisation of the #Fediverse but not for safety. There's a large conversation going on about marginalised folx and safety and most devs seem to be absent from following it, and the evangelists silent in raising it.
Let me point you to my QT of part of just one of @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io 's threads in case you've never seen them.
It's absolute privilege to be pushing the tech conversation with the bros while absent from the ones about actually existing safety issues.
Moderators seem almost invisible at calckey.social for example, despite @npub1pqk…z65u stressing moderation when allaying fears about QTs; it's often left to individual users to mention using CWs, and for the most part folx there aren't using them. That's taken a lot of the shine off for me tbh.

I have concerns. Like it's nice when it's small accounts on small instances, but already new folks on calckey.social are wondering where these old posts are popping up from and why they're getting interactions from from a migration.
I've seen some admins express concern about the legal implications of importing and hosting posts made on other servers with different ToS'.
Or that content that wouldn't be allowed on an instance now being imported in and being seen.
Or stuff that should be behind a CW on a new instance getting seen on import by folks.
Now I'm a friend of the project and user, but the instance flagship server has really raised red flags in my mind about a propensity for new bling while still ignoring the many safety and moderation tools that users have been also asking for, particularly from marginalised communities.
We promised QT with good moderation and didn't had a mod team in place beyond Calc & Chris when the influx happened. Folks barely used CWs and our #queer #calckey sister instance had to up our filters to turn down some of the noise in our timelines because we were also interacting and sharing our Calckey knowledge.
I'm quite cynical and jaded by what I've seen. I think we've overhyped the bling and underdelivered on the granular controls, safety, Fedi culture, and even with QTs, our instances won't be much a better experience for #BlackMastodon folx if my experience on the generalist instance as a #queer, #trans woman is anything to go by.

#[0] I was over on calckey.social and the timeline was filled with this talk. I absolutely hated it and came back to my home instance. If this where the Fediverse is going then 🤮🤮🤮
And if that becomes the culture and you're over here rather than hands-on admin of a platform with quote toots - that you recognise need good moderation - then you're probably part of the problem too.
