The taste is there. Dried sage made a great addition. It has enough salt now. And topping it with bourbon barrel smoked sugar was a great choice.

First time making scones. They're American style, with blackberry and rosemary. The only sweetener is honey, and they're glazed with honey butter.

More matzo ball soup tonight. This time I used the homemade matzo meal, and put fresh onion and garlic into the matzo balls, which tastes *so* good. I also put in slices of seared lion's mane mushrooms, which was a nice touch.
I still need to let the matzo balls rest longer in the fridge. They didn't *completely* fall apart this time, but they weren't much better.

This isn't the best looking pasta I've ever made, but it was *really* good. I browned butter, cooked whole garlic cloves in that, and then cooked the vegetables in there. After that, I removed the vegetables and added freshly shredded smoked goat cheese and pasta water to thicken. Vegetables went back in and the sauce went over the penne. The only additional spices were salt and black pepper.

We just found a bat on our porch. And it's very cute! From my research, it looks like a canyon bat (Parastrellus hesperus) specifically.
Apparently it's the smallest species of bat in the United States, and as you can see in the picture, it's a tiny little guy. Just so weensy. So eepy.

So, I tried the Actual Veggies ® mushroom burger.
Taste: 6/10
It's lightly seasoned to bring out the mushroom flavor. Not spectacular, but not bad. Everything else overpowered it, but it was detectable.
Texture: 3/10
It's mush. Not good.
So that's an overall 4.5/10 on the patty. The rest of the burger really saved this.

Tried the Meati brand mushroom steak tonight. Figured that it would probably go well as the protein in a teriyaki bowl, and I was definitely right.
Also tried it with just salt and pepper. It definitely needs some kind of marinade, seeing as how it's pretty much pure mycelium bound together with a tiny bit of oat fiber and chickpea flour.

Back when I did Christmas, it was something similar. Decorations came out the day after Thanksgiving, and they went back up… sometime later. Usually by New Years.

That's not because culture is stagnant. There are distinct fashions that belong exclusively to the 2000's. The "Scene" subculture came and went in that time. The electronic music of 2003 is unlike that of 2023.
This columnist isn't noticing a stagnation of culture. They're failing to notice their own aging.
