yeah, definitely has the vibes of systems I've seen in Alan Kay lectures. ;)
Dynamicland in Oakland has some amazing stuff that is forward looking (Alan Kay is also involved) but it's basically just a lab, not something which exists outside of it yet.

Agreed.
Berkeley has a ban against gas powered leaf blowers, which is something at least, but does not go nearly far enough.
Especially since many routinely violate the ban.

I was "blessed" to learn that the USA adopted compulsory educational models based upon the Prussian system.
The Prussian system (to dumb it down) was founded after they had lost some war and when asked why, the officers blamed it on "free thinker" disorderly soldiers who when told to storm the enemies were given retorts such as, "the enemy has the higher ground, we'll get slaughtered!" So rather than acknowledging their soldiers were providing salient perspective, the Prussians decided to institute compulsory education to create obedient soldiers who would follow orders of the teachers, even if the teachers were incorrect.
What's left out of that is that the aristocracy still sent their offspring to institutions which used the seven "classic" subjects (basically exhumed from Roman documents), so the USA inherited that socioeconomic divide too, more generalized in colloquialisms as "Ivy League" privileged sorts. The reality is, that "Ivy League" track begins as early as preschool for the rich and powerful whereas the prison industrial complex/mercenary industrial complex paradigm is similarly in effect for those who are thrown to the whims of compulsory education.
It's not unique to the USA either, Japan also took inspiration from the Prussians.
Anyway, even knowing that, and not being an Ivy League sort, I don't know if it made my experience better. I know someone who never graduated college making $30/hr at a pretty chill job. Whereas I'm a decade older, have a B.A. have been cited in others' Masters and Doctoral publications and mostly just count my blessings that I didn't get ground to even more of a pulp since I never enlisted. As a minor, nps.navy.mil already had me working on their systems pro bono, uncited & I was not the only kid being predated upon in such a manner.
Meanwhile, when incarcerated I met someone in his 40s who was proudly illiterate.
I'm no privileged demon & no complete idiot but I don't think I'm well off either.

Watching the BSDCan videos via @npub17gp…7p4g and it's so much better at recovering from intermittent network outages (I listen to things while I drive and often go through areas with poor cellular data coverage) I am impressed!
Leagues better than YouTube, Twitch, Kick. All of which basically give up trying after brief network fussiness.

Oh, and regarding whether such organizations are censored?
Let's just say the way I found that archive.org link, was by searching for "Musicians Against the Copyright of Samples" and MACoS which yielded precisely ONE RESULT which was a FediVerse post, of mine, from a year ago. ;(
Pretty sure a year ago, when I searched for such things, it wasn't that bad.
The window of opportunity/gateway to the knowledge of our rapidly vanishing/being erased past seems to be closing.

There's MACoS (Musicians Against the Copyright of Samples) but I don't think they have been particularly active in a while.
Some of the most brilliant electronic composers are amidst their ranks, decades ahead of their time though.

Less formally, there is the 2009 documentary "Copyright Criminals" featuring DJ Q*Bert et al, I own it on DVD, but I have to say the "legal advice" given, while probably well researched, doesn't contend with the reality that the for-profit music "biz" has been rife with payola and corruption for decades and that an average individual has a snowball's chance in hell at making a penny without kowtowing to some really insidious pieces of shit and all that is entailed with "selling out" as a result.
In other words, their legal recommendations are effectively useless.
Some people get away with murder, other people will make sure that your message never gets heard and it's not particularly cut and dry and all the BS around "sample clearance" and residuals and whatnot are basically only there for the honchos who are part of the corruption in the first place.

I've been to seed libraries.
Berkeley has BASIL (Bay Area Seed Interchange Library) for example.
