Recalibrating the model
Now another group of scientists have gone back to the original World3 model and recalibrated it against the best fit data, which is what has prompted Klement’s article. ‘Recalibration of limits to growth: An update of the World3 model’, by Nebel et al, is published open access in the Journal of Industrial Ecology.
The point of doing this is—as they say in their abstract—is
to better match empirical data on world development.
For assurance, the article goes into detail about their method and their approach, including access to the Python scripts they have used, which have been posted on Github. As they explain:
Since the model was calibrated with the limited capabilities in terms of computing power and data processing in 1972, it seems interesting to what extent a recalibration of the model is possible and what are the effects of such a recalibration. The data situation has improved enormously since then.
Overshoot and collapse
What this means is that the recalibrated model reflects the best available current data.
Klement explains the approach this way:
If the recalibrated model deviates significantly from the forecasts of the 1970s, we have made progress. And given the accuracy of the original model, we can also take some comfort that any progress we made is likely to be real and we have truly extended economic growth further into the future.
And the outcomes of this recalibration? Well, they’re not good. Again from the abstract to the article:
This improved parameter set results in a World3 simulation that shows the same overshoot and collapse mode in the coming decade as the original business as usual scenario of the LtG standard run. [My emphasis]
Industrial production decline
It is worth spelling out the dimensions of this overshoot and collapse. As it happens, there are some handy charts both in Joachim Klement’s article and in the original paper. I’ve reproduced Klement’s versions here because they are easier to read, but the originals are downloadable from the original article.
The first chart is for industrial production, where the recalibrated version tracks the original to the centimetre, pretty much. Does this matter? Klement does the usual wave towards the fact that we live in a much more services-based economy than we did even when the Limits team did the original study.
Peaking food production
I’m not completely convinced of this. As David Mindell observes in The New Lunar Society (I have a review in the works), industrial production has significant multiplier effects on other economic activity, even if this is largely overlooked by economics [p33]. The updated population diagram also follows closely the decline in the mid-2030s that is seen in the Limits base case projection.
On food production, it also seems to be peaking right about now indicating that despite continuous growth in the global population, we are experiencing declining global food production.
Delaying the peak
So it’s possible to imagine that one of the reasons why population starts to decline is because there isn’t enough food to go around. It’s also possible to imagine that the higher peak, and faster overshoot, is a result of the intensification of agriculture and food production, which is about the application of technology. As one of the Limits’ authors, Dennis Meadows, always insisted when asked, technology can delay a peak, but the crash comes harder when it comes.

Whenever I hear about the city of Edmonton, I think first and foremost of Lucy; the lonely, abused and neglected elephant in their zoo.
Lucy has suffered for years at the hands of zookeepers who have shown to know little about elephant care and well-being.
She is now elderly, suffering from many ailments (which they caused, and refuse to treat). She is kept in deplorable living quarters, and suffers through the freezing winters of Canada.
Two elephant sanctuaries in the southern US offered years ago to take her in, paying for the expense of transport themselves. In sanctuary, she would not only be in the company of other eles, she would be cared for by experts who know, understand and truly love elephants.
But the city of Edmonton, and the majority of its residents, refuse sanctuary for this aging, ailing ele. They are more concerned with the money she brings in for visitors who look at her and ignore her suffering daily.
So it doesn't surprise me the city takes this stand on other creatures too.
The reputation of the city of Edmonton is one of cruelty and indifference to millions of ppl around the world.

Winning the midterms won't be enough at this point; if we even have midterms to vote in by 2026.
We'll need either a whole new crop of Dems to vote for, or a whole new Party.
Bc, as we've seen in the past; just voting for the same old Dems has contributed to the mess we're currently in.
There are a handful of Dems worth voting for that I can see; and the best hope I have is that they get together and form a new Party.
The other option is revolution, which will long and bloody; and carry no guarantee of success without an organized group ready to take the lead once the bloodletting stopped.
With the climate clock ticking, I fear we have no time for that option.

From reading up on carbon taxes from another source, the negatives seem to outweigh any benefits.
From my perspective, carbon taxes simply allow the exploitation of fossil fuels to continue, and even expand.
Which is probably why emissions keep rising every year.
If the true goal is cut emissions drastically, which is what is needed, carbon taxes seem to have little effect.
Bribing citizens that is a good/workable solution with rebate payments of just allowing business as usual to continue.

Climate change is going to cause a migrant crisis we can scarcely imagine. The response will be brutal.
A while back, I read an article by Michael L. Fox about the climate migrant crisis and how it will get exponentially worse over the next few decades. As farms go bankrupt, cities run out of water, and entire countries become too hot to live in during the summer, hundreds of millions of people will travel North in hopes of finding somewhere safe to live.
The people of Europe, North Asia, and North America won’t take it well. Just look at how Europeans reacted to a few million refugees from Syria. They became more racist and more xenophobic, and the political spectrum shifted markedly to the right. Just from a few million people fleeing the violence and chaos in their home country.
According to the UN, there could be 1.2 billion climate refugees by 2050, and that doesn’t even include internal refugees. If a few million migrants can cause countries to start electing rightwing leaders, what will happen when there are hundreds of millions of migrants?
As Michael says, “My guess is that the populations of the ‘wealthy west’ will feel beseiged, frightened, and angry, and they will elect psychopathic strongmen, Trumps and Hitlers, who have the ‘strength’ to do what’s necessary. It will be brutal. Our societies will become brutal.”

Becoming collapse-aware can make you feel like you're going insane. You'd be crazy if it didn't.
I became collapse-aware a few years ago, and it completely changed my life.
Collapse-aware is a term that has become much more popular in recent years, especially among climate activists. Some people prefer the term doomer or collapsnik or eco-pessimist, but I think collapse-aware is the best term to describe someone like me.
But before I can tell you what it means to be collapse-aware, I have to tell you what “collapse-aware” means. If you’re collapse-aware, it means you’ve learned enough about climate change, pollution, resource depletion, and biodiversity loss to conclude that civilization is unsustainable and will eventually collapse.
Whether the collapse happens suddenly or takes several decades, and whether it happens soon or in the distant future, is up for debate. But the end result is the same: a pre-industrial world with a much smaller population.

You're reading into my original comment a harsh tone that wasn't intended. And a misinterpretation that I'll admit was my bad for not making clear the distinction between personal wind/solar and the industries of wind/solar that are placing these contraptions across the planet on a massive scale.
Good on you for your less energy achievements.
What I'm addressing is the false notion that wind/solar will save us and that wind/solar are environmentally and human rights friendly.
The wind/solar industries at scale are equally as harmful to the planet as fossil fuel extraction. Currently, they still add emissions bc it takes fossil fuels for mineral extraction, manufacturing, transport, installation, maintenance and replacement.
And it will be that way for the foreseeable future.
Any talk of wind/solar completely replacing FFs is pipedreams and false promises, usually made by those who are making money off of them.
The environmental destruction for extracting the minerals and building the structures on previously undeveloped lands is adding to our problems instead of fixing any of them.
The mounting waste from discarded ones also adds to the problem.
I'm saying, if ppl who support wind/solar want to be honest, they need to see and understand the down sides of the industry - then weigh their support for wind/solar against their support for the environment and human rights.

This isn't limited to the Philippines.
It's worldwide.
Wherever solar and turbines are installed, especially in rural and undeveloped areas, their is a negative environmental effect.
Whenever solar and turbines are manufactured, there are negative human rights and environmental costs.
I'm curious how the wind and solar supporters justify this with their supposed beliefs in human rights and environmental protection.

Every aspect of modernity is just a trap that ensnares us in one way or another, leading to our eventual extinction, taking most life forms on the planet with us.
Even if we ditch FFs, unnecessary electronics and plastics, switching to nature based resources like wood, cotton and plant based organic foods - the problem is providing food, housing and clothing for 8 billion ppl on the planet.

We were losing slowly. Now we are losing quickly. Democracy, accountability, human rights, social justice – all were rolling backwards as money swarmed our politics. Above all, our life-support systems – the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, ecosystems, ice and snow – have been hammered and hammered, regardless of who is in power. Donald Trump might strike the killer blows, but he is not the cause of an ecocidal economic system. He is the embodiment of it.
Under Joe Biden, the US was missing its own climate goals, and those goals were insufficient to meet the global objective of limiting heating to 1.5C above preindustrial levels. That target in turn might not be tight enough to prevent a tipping of Earth systems. Already, at roughly 1.3C of heating, we see what looks alarmingly like climatic flickering: the ever wilder perturbations that tend to precede the collapse of a complex system.
Trump has pledged to wage war on planet Earth, ripping up US climate commitments and reverting to unrestrained fossil fuel extraction and burning. If he follows the Project 2025 agenda, he will leave the UN climate framework altogether, making his assault on Earth systems much harder to reverse.
His evangelical base, eager to advance the biblical apocalypse, will love him for it. Most simply deny climate breakdown. Others perceive events such as floods and fires not as warnings, but as joyous portents of the end of times: a great cleansing, in which the righteous will be uplifted to sit at the right hand of God, while their enemies will be cast into the fiery pit. What we will see under a new Trump presidency is a neat alignment of the interests of fossil fuel companies and a constituency gunning for Armageddon (and hoping that Benjamin Netanyahu will assist its delivery).

“Don’t make me think” has been a mantra of modern design and user experience. This philosophy is equally pervasive when it comes to technology in general. Buy this technology, the pitch goes, it does the thinking for you, it does the hard work for you. And it’s always on, always available. Store everything and no matter what time of day or night it is, you can get exactly what you want instantly. In the data center industry, they call it 99.99% uptime. It comes at the same cost to the environment as making silicon 99.99% pure. Huge costs. Massive costs.
In a typical data center, “only 6 to 12 percent of energy consumed is devoted to active computational processes,” Steven Gonzalez Monserrate has estimated. “The remainder is allocated to cooling and maintaining chains upon chains of redundant fail-safes to prevent costly downtime.” Perhaps this has changed somewhat because of the voracious processing demand from AI. However, the basic point remains true. Guaranteeing your convenience, and your access to all that crap data you’re never going to look at again, costs 90% more mining, 90% more materials, 90% more electricity, 90% more water, 90% more waste. All so that you can potentially access that photo or file that there is a 99.99% chance you will never access. A data center is like before the start of an Formula 1 race. All these high-performance, energy-intense cars revving and revving for a race most of them will never run. Here we are. This is us. This is civilization, modernity, progress, innovation. Spending so much energy to create and store crap.

Big Tech laughs about all this crap production. This is how Big Tech makes so much money in its data centers. It sells them as plush five-star hotels for superior VIP data, when in reality it’s running a datafill, a data dump. If most of the data stored in a typical data center was processed and accessed every day, then everything would explode, the servers would fry. The demand would crash everything. The data center business case is dependent on most people never accessing the data they’ve stored. You’re paying for a data graveyard.
To protect their profits, Big Tech has historically made it very hard for you to delete. Artist, Honor Ash, observed how, “Initially, Gmail didn’t even include a delete button. Not only was it no longer necessary to delete emails regularly to make space in your inbox, but it was actually not even possible. This shift broke everyone’s deletion habit—it ended the ritualistic appraisal of what should be kept, and ushered in a default in which literally everything should.”
For almost thirty years of professional content management work, I’ve had to deal with the argument that we have to keep everything because you never know what will be important in the future. This was in the middle of intranets, websites and computer systems, where nobody could find anything because of the terrible search design and because of the awful information architecture. And what they did find was usually some sort of dodgy draft, some copy of a copy, or something that was way out of date, inaccurate or useless. Keeping all this junk data does not simply reduce the chances of findability, it also increases cybersecurity risk. Huge quantities of poorly structured and badly maintained data are an invitation to hacking and other risks.

The following conversation was recorded in March 2024. It has been edited for clarity and length.
Peter Watts: In this corner, the biosphere. We’ve spent a solid year higher than 1.5 degrees Celsius; we’re wiping out species at a rate of somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 annually; insect populations are crashing; and we’re losing the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, no matter what we do at this point. Alaskapox has just claimed its first human victim, and there are over 15,000 zoonoses expected to pop up their heads and take a bite out of our asses by the end of the century. And we’re expecting the exhaustion of all arable land around 2050, which is actually kind of moot because studies from institutions as variable as MIT and the University of Melbourne suggest that global civilizational collapse is going to happen starting around 2040 or 2050.
In response to all of this, the last COP was held in a petrostate and was presided over by the CEO of an oil company; the next COP is pretty much the same thing. We’re headed for the cliff, and not only have we not hit the brakes yet, we still have our foot on the gas.
In that corner: Dan Brooks and Sal Agosta, with a Darwinian survival guide. So, take it away, Dan. Guide us to survival. What’s the strategy?
Daniel Brooks: Well, the primary thing that we have to understand or internalize is that what we’re dealing with is what is called a no-technological-solution problem. In other words, technology is not going to save us, real or imaginary. We have to change our behavior. If we change our behavior, we have sufficient technology to save ourselves. If we don’t change our behavior, we are unlikely to come up with a magical technological fix to compensate for our bad behavior. This is why Sal and I have adopted a position that we should not be talking about sustainability, but about survival, in terms of humanity’s future. Sustainability has come to mean, what kind of technological fixes can we come up with that will allow us to continue to do business as usual without paying a penalty for it? As evolutionary biologists, we understand that all actions carry biological consequences. We know that relying on indefinite growth or uncontrolled growth is unsustainable in the long term, but that’s the behavior we’re seeing now.
Stepping back a bit. Darwin told us in 1859 that what we had been doing for the last 10,000 or so years was not going to work. But people didn’t want to hear that message. So along came a sociologist who said, “It’s OK; I can fix Darwinism.” This guy’s name was Herbert Spencer, and he said, “I can fix Darwinism. We’ll just call it natural selection, but instead of survival of what’s-good-enough-to-survive-in-the-future, we’re going to call it survival of the fittest, and it’s whatever is best now.” Herbert Spencer was instrumental in convincing most biologists to change their perspective from “evolution is long-term survival” to “evolution is short-term adaptation.” And that was consistent with the notion of maximizing short term profits economically, maximizing your chances of being reelected, maximizing the collection plate every Sunday in the churches, and people were quite happy with this.
Well, fast-forward and how’s that working out? Not very well. And it turns out that Spencer’s ideas were not, in fact, consistent with Darwin’s ideas. They represented a major change in perspective. What Sal and I suggest is that if we go back to Darwin’s original message, we not only find an explanation for why we’re in this problem, but, interestingly enough, it also gives us some insights into the kinds of behavioral changes we might want to undertake if we want to survive.

hype and nonsense continue unabated. As I mentioned last time, optimism bias causes us to think that we can do things which in reality we cannot. Here's another perfect example of more nonsense. Here's even more nonsense. As was pointed out in Denial of Reality, climate change isn't going to be stopped or reversed on human timescales. Most people think that all we have to do is reduce emissions, not realizing that emissions is another symptom predicament of ecological overshoot, meaning that what must be reduced if climate change is to be reduced is overshoot, not emissions. This is much more difficult than simply reducing emissions, because it requires a reduction of technology use. John Peach explains using calculations from Tom Murphy and Tim Garrett and the Stefan-Boltzmann Law.
Once one understands the concepts in Tim Garrett's, Tom Murphy's, and John Peach's work, one can clearly see that climate change isn't the big predicament most people make it out to be, OVERSHOOT is. Climate change, emissions, pollution loading, energy and resource decline, biodiversity loss, extinction, etc. are all SYMPTOMS of overshoot. This means that reducing (or attempting to eliminate) emissions alone will NOT reduce climate change because it is being caused by overshoot from technology use. Thus, the hype in my first paragraph above about "renewable" energy replacing coal-fired energy will not help to solve climate change. Replacing coal-fired energy is an attempt to continue civilization, so in the end, it is nothing more than bargaining to maintain civilization.
These facts are not going to change regardless of what type of technology is used or how complex it is. In effect, our use of technology is the entire predicament in a nutshell. Now, this does not mean that all we have to do is stop using technology. Some technologies would be difficult if not impossible to stop using. Most of our lives today revolve around one type of technology or another. But without the fossil fuel platform, modernity cannot be continued. Electrification will not solve it, so that isn't an answer or solution. Hydrogen will not solve it. None of the mainstream ideas (such as AI) will solve it. Using reductionist thinking will not solve it. NOTHING will solve it because what we face is a predicament, not a problem. Acceptance of that fact is required before moving forward, because anything less than that will guarantee coming up with ideas which will only worsen the outcome rather than improve it.
Once one realizes all of this, the next idea which must be mastered is that 8 billion or more people cannot survive on this planet for long in civilization without damaging the underlying ecosystem which provides our habitat. Resilience and sustainability are key features which any system of living must provide; civilization and city living is impossible in such a scenario. Comprehending that only a small segment of the current population will make it out of this century, if any of the population, is important. Much of that depends upon an intact ecosystem, which is definitely not guaranteed. The amount of damage that will be done by the 8 billion people currently here as collapse deepens probably means a dystopian world, and even that is a very big IF. Given today's trajectories, the most likely outcome is extinction for most species, including us.
Collapse is another consequence of overshoot; it is yet another symptom predicament. Many people often forget the social aspects of overshoot and blame them on other things, yet increasing cost of living, decline of happiness, mass shootings, increasing polarization, increasing disease rates, addiction, and many other issues can be directly tied to overshoot and/or the system of civilization which ultimately causes overshoot and collapse.
I mentioned Tom Murphy above, and one of his articles comes in handy once again to point out precisely just how ludicrous some of our assumptions about civilization (or modernity as he calls it) actually are. I remain somewhat surprised so many people still believe in free will and the illusion of control. Tom dispenses with all that nonsense quickly in the first paragraph by pointing out the reality that Santa Claus is a part of a set of fairy tales. His article pairs nicely with The Cycle of Life, pointing out that just because we lack free will (or other inconvenient truths) doesn't mean that there is no point to life. Likewise, just because those of us who understand the truth about what is and what isn't sustainable doesn't mean that we have "given up" on anything but unsustainable or untenable pursuits. The real wisdom in Tom's article comes in the last two paragraphs, quote:
If modernity is not to last very long, what’s the point in pretending that it will? What’s the point in holding onto a worldview predicated on modernity’s survival? What’s the point of our current choices, jobs, ways of living? To what end do we pursue the things we presently do?
Just because a lot of the things we do today will turn out to be pointless does not mean there’s no point to anything! What a huge and unwarranted leap that is! In the context of a completely different lifestyle as subordinate partners among a cast of many in the community of life, one might find innumerable sources of meaning. Living, loving, caring, helping, singing, laughing, learning, respecting, offering gratitude, appreciating beauty, jabbering, teasing, playing, sharing—for instance—are all part of being human and of being one form of life among many others on this planet: lots of room to find meaning and “points” that validate life. If the meaning in your life is contingent on modernity, then maybe you’ve come to the wrong shop, and ought to look for new forms of meaning that are built to last.
