No one's defending the presence of an ableist culture - we're all aware that accessibility should be improved, but no one (including Aral) discusses on the how. Instead, he rants to his 43K followers and expects everything to magically fix itself. So no, that's not what we're discussing here. He doesn't realize that trashing said culture directly affects volunteers.
With all that time I used posting on Mastodon, I could've instead fixed a few accessibility issues in GNOME, but because some guy decided to dogpile, that didn't happen. Aral also had more than enough time to isolate accessibility issues, but instead he decided to rant on Mastodon and write a blog post about it.

I don't think anybody disagrees with ableism - I too agree that leaving the screen reader broken for 8 years is ableist.
Once again, the problem we have with Aral is he dogpiles volunteers without contributing anything himself. Good accessibility is extremely difficult to achieve, and to some extent the only people who can improve it is have the ones relying on it fix it themselves, because they understand what these tools are supposed to do.
You can't expect us to fix something if we don't even know what to do or where to start.

I don't agree, but I respect the sentiment. Accessibility is extremely difficult to achieve, because accommodating those you literally cannot relate to takes a lot of energy. I would argue that learning to accommodate others takes exponentially more time and energy than creating a mockup, planning the code structure, and writing it combined.
As someone who has some ADHD traits, sudden and subtle movements easily distract me, but unfortunately my curse is not something everyone can relate to, so it's hard for them to properly accommodate me when they don't even know if they're addressing it correctly. It's especially hard when the codebase typically becomes much more complex than it was to begin with.
An anecdotal example, but one I think is relevant, is GNOME Calendar. Accessibility in Calendar is, to put it in the nicest way possible, almost nonexistent: Many widgets cannot be interacted with using a keyboard and can only be triggered using a pointer. I'd go so far as to say that it's literally unusable for anyone who absolutely relies on their keyboard. And believe me, I *want* to make it accessible. I *am* serious about it, but I have no idea where to start, and even the maintainer doesn't know what to do.
Maybe GNOME Calendar is an ableist application because of this, I don't know, but I don't want to throw "ableist" around because many developers and maintainers don't even know what to do to accommodate those kinds of people.

Fedora Change Proposals mainly cover proposals/changes and the reasons behind them, not the reasons behind refusing a proposal or explaining the technical limitations.
Covering substantial proposals/changes is scalable, writing and summarizing about every technical limitation however is not.

I also understand the fact that people (including myself) may not have the time to understand the reasoning behind a decision, but that's not my point - my point is that those people will use their free time to trash projects instead of educating themselves, or at the very least, not trash it.

That said, the ability to manually resize was one of the things I absolutely hated on older GNOME apps.
I struggle a lot with pointer accuracy due to fidgety hands, so I would often click (and hold) the resizable bar *by accident* and have it resized to an undesirable size. It was always infuriating to resize it back to the desirable size.

it's such a shame the way Thom wrote the article makes it look like @npub1l38…ky3k is fighting against GNOME, which isn't the interpretation I got when I read the original article. They're just trying to make those apps work well on their desktop and explaining why - GNOME apps are made for the GNOME desktop (tested, supported, etc.), and therefore the Cinnamon developers want to provide functional, well-tested platform-agnostic GTK apps, which is a valid reason that I 100% support.
Linux Mint isn't trashing GNOME in any way, and they also explicitly said they're not blaming GNOME for anything.

contrary to popular belief, GNOME isn't trying to hurt anyone with libadwaita. Every GNOME app was and will always be made for GNOME (except those who eventually decide not to), so nothing's being GNOME-ified on that front.
Before libadwaita, there was libhandy, which is essentially libadwaita for GTK3. Before libhandy, GNOME desktop-specific widgets were part of GTK, even though GTK also had its DE-agnostic equivalent widgets. So, what libhandy and libadwaita achieve is decoupling these GNOME desktop-specific widgets into its own collection of widgets specifically for the GNOME desktop.
In other words, libhandy/libadwaita literally made GTK *more* platform-agnostic by splitting itself. If anything, GTK was literally a "GNOME-ification of GTK" before libhandy and libadwaita happened. These platform-agnostic widgets are still and will remain available in GTK, and make apps that (theoretically) fit well on all desktops. A few examples of apps using GTK4 without libadwaita are Transmission and experimental versions of Inkscape.
