Such a beautiful video, visually! Created by a true artist. I recommend this short, gentle stop-motion video about ME/CFS.
Great point in it about how amazing it is when a friend takes the time to understand ME/CFS, and perhaps donate a little of their time to keep us company. I never expect this from anyone because I see how busy and demanding life already is for everyone, but it’s a welcome gift from those who can manage it. Especially those who understand that this must be pre-planned.

The irony of being too exhausted to write a post for #MEawarenessday
THIS is why it isn’t spoken about more.
This is why the world isn’t more outraged by this debilitating illness’s lack of even one single basic treatment.
We need more advocates to help us raise awareness and petition governments to pledge more funding for research. Good studies need proper funding. Please talk to people about this illness, even if you don’t know anyone with it. 💗

Day 4 (4th April) and I just joined this so here goes! My answers to the great question prompts (see quoted post for more info and context):
1. What is your current hobby(special interest)?
Watching Black American history shows on Netflix (Hidden Figures, Harriet, Self-Made, Gifted Hands).
Planting and growing seeds and bulbs while having no idea what I’m doing!
And my lifelong special interest is horses: their ecology, biology, behaviour, communication, etc. Mostly wild horses.
2. Tell us a thing you like about your autism? What do you like about yourself?
My work is usually very thorough and deemed high quality, plus I always strive to have integrity and honour my word. I’m passionate about DEI and accessibility, too.
3. What is your favourite stim?
Fizzy drinks! But I try to limit them due to the negative impact on my health. I especially love Cherry Pepsi Max.
4. How would you explain autism to someone who never heard about this?
I have a spiky skill set and senses. That means that, while abilities and senses vary from person-to-person and between contexts, mine tend to vary much more wildly. Sometimes that means I have a strength that is stronger than most, other times it might mean I find some situations much more challenging or even impossible compared to most people. The way I communicate, express emotions, and cope with stress tends to be very different as an autistic person too. That means it can be hard to connect with non-autistic people and it takes a lot more deliberate effort to explain myself or understand others. I can sometimes understand other autistics intuitively and it’s so much easier to connect, but due to the whole spiky skill set thing that us autistics have, meaning we are a highly diverse group of people… this isn’t true for everyone.

Why some* autistics love house chores:
Doing laundry, vacuuming, or things like tidying can help bring a sense of familiarity to days that are disordered or not part of our routine.
I feel so much more relaxed when I can get some so-called “boring” house chores done on unusual days. It brings a sense of order, accomplishment, control, and familiarity as I know these chores well.
Of course, being AuDHD, when days follow a familiar routine, I am totally the opposite and crave spontaneity! 🤣

One of the hardest things about my course continues to be not understanding what is being asked of me in assignments.
As soon as I know what they’re asking for, I can do it. Even if I don’t necessarily know how yet, I can still teach myself that, learn new concepts or skills, etc.
I’m wondering how to solve this problem. Do I just schedule 1-to-1 chats with staff for each assignment? Not sure if that would be allowed. I can ask questions in the forum online, but I could do with the chance to walk through ALL instructions for an assignment to check I really do understand it, not only ask questions when I realise I probably don’t understand one part.

There is so much I want to share about my experience of working in technology as girl (then, from age 14) and woman / non-binary (now) but it’s too hard to even write about it. This ‘letter’ below is a good start, though. We need more people to be allies like this to those who don’t fit stereotypes… in any field.

An example of a skill that many here will have gained - a skill that has been built up on social media platforms to support others with disabilities:
Writing good ALT text and/or image descriptions - a valuable, versatile skill.
This skill means you can:
- write succinctly (don’t describe everything if not needed, keep within character limits, respect people’s attention spans)
- pick out and describe only the most important and relevant aspects of a visual based on the context it is in (this will differ for the same image when in different contexts)
- help describe the image’s own context and overall message or style, if it’s relevant
You can therefore describe many kinds of visuals in succinct ways using words in this way. I.e. Whenever the recipient of your words cannot see (for any reason) a visual that you can, you can help them be included in your experience by describing what you see.
You can:
- describe visuals over the phone or in an audio message
- describe visuals in an email when you cannot share the visual itself
- help someone find or identify something that they’ve never seen (and you don’t have a picture to share with them)
- and many more!

Today’s 3 Good Things:
Glad to have opted to study two modules at once because they’re helping me with varied learning perspectives, but also spacing and recall when I take time away from one.
Great careers talk by my old uni yesterday, designed specifically to support disabled students and graduates like me.
I started trying to identify the skills and strengths I’ve gained from supporting myself with my disabilities. I almost cried with happiness when I began. It’s not all bad; I notice that I actively apply these strengths and skills elsewhere in my life and work, and ensure the benefits are shared with others whenever possible.

Another university joining in on Quiet graduation ceremonies!! 🎉 Yay! And a quote from the legend that is Dr Luke Beardon (a wonderful autistic autism researcher, lecturer at Sheffield Hallam and author of some brilliant and succinct books about autism that I highly recommend).
My university promised their first Quiet graduation this summer after so many requests from students when they heard about Nottingham Trent’s first Quiet ceremonies, but then they absolutely failed to follow through. Quiet graduations help people who, for all sorts of reasons, cannot access the usual big, busy and high energy ceremonies but want to have something official.
Many people don’t know that ME/CFS often involves similar increases sensory sensitivities as neurodivergent conditions like autism. But also, people who cannot tolerate big crowds of people, being up on stage in front of everyone, clapping, or any of the other aspects involved in a regular ceremony can benefit from this option too.
I did my own thing in the end as I couldn’t see a way to access my own ceremony. I couldn’t even enter the venue on a normal day due to the soundscape (loads of echoes and noise), so how would I handle that with masses more people and noise?

The Energy Requirements of Words.
While home alone for a couple of weeks I’ve found the lack of words being spoken or heard around me at home (in-person, live) has helped give me LOADS more inner energy. It’s like my brain has been released from trying to process it all constantly. I feel like I can think better, like my mind is more expansive and less like it’s just trying to fight to stay afloat.
Is this an autistic thing anyone else has heard before?
I know plenty of autistics are hyperlexic, so I doubt what I experience is universal. I’m not dyslexic, but just find live conversations… exhausting. Not sure if it relates to all live communication, but I know words are the hardest for me (despite being told I’m articulate 😒).
Still been reading lots and watching TV/movies, and they seem slightly draining perhaps but no way near as much - probably because these are not live and my role is passive.
Love to hear any other autistic people’s thoughts or reflections on this.
