Boycott American products or products made in the USA?
Élodie Lapierre argues in this article that we should not boycott USA products made in France, only imported ones, because they employ more than 180,000 people in France. (even more in Europe)
According to her, American products and services keep France working:
in the food industry:
- McDonald's employs more than 78,000 people directly and 28,000 farmers who supply nearly 1,600 restaurants across FR
- Burger King has more than 25,000 employees
- KFC employs 15,000 people

We read the transparency report of Jottacloud 🇳🇴 (@nprofile…mw4k), a Norwegian cloud provider, where they explain how they handle government requests for users' data. If you don't know what a "Warrant Canary" is, keep reading!
In Norway, the gov can issue warrants for the search and seizure of customers data and it can also stop the company from telling its users about this. (secret warrants)
So, what does Jottacloud do in these cases?
1- They need a special court order (warrant) before they can hand over user data to the gov.
2- If they do get one, they'll let the user know, unless they're not allowed to.
3- If the gov asks them to keep it secret ("gag order"), Jottacloud uses something called a Warrant Canary.
What is a Warrant Canary?
It's a way for a service provider to tell its users that it's been served with a government subpoena, even though they're not allowed to reveal it.
It's like a warning sign. Jottacloud puts out a statement every week that's timestamped and signed with their private key to verify its authenticity, meaning that "everything's fine". If they stop updating that statement, it might mean they've received a gag order and can't tell the user about it.
They want to be open with users, but also follow the law.

Swiss Tech Company Proton Warns of Surveillance State Expansion ⚠️
Proton CEO Andy Yen has raised concerns about a proposed revision to Switzerland's surveillance law, which he says would lead to an "aggressive expansion of the surveillance state". The law would require companies like Proton, which provide secure email and messaging services, to cooperate with authorities in extracting data, potentially compromising users' privacy.

Threema 🇨🇭 is a messaging app that competes with WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram. Actually it is a poll for those who use streaming services :) The aim was to help us decide on which platform we should create a playlist for everyone, but according to the current results it won't be possible to choose a specific platform (too divided). Lemmy as an non-US alternative to Red dit, using people-owned servers
Here's a post that explains what Lemmy is - it's a decentralised link aggregator that's an alternative to Reddit 🇺🇸.

But we're thinking of joining Lemmy, just to be able to use and test it and form an opinion. The tricky bit is choosing an instance 😅. We care more about a nice and open community to diversity of opinions than if it's in Poland or Finland or any other EU country. (suggestions?)

Statcounter statistics are based on websites that include its script, and its clients are mostly based in the West. It's a nice stats tool, but we're not sure it fully represents the Chinese market. So if Linux is growing in China, not sure that Statcounter will be able to see the trend.

Yes, it definitely will. But their Bronze premium version costs 10€ per *year*, and that isn't that expensive either. It's less than a coffee a month. If people want more storage and unlimited features, there are higher-priced options available, but there's still a free version.
With regard to Quodari, the free version should be less restrictive. The ability to have followers and a public profile is fundamental and shouldn't be paid.
These alternative social networks tend to have a freemium business model, offering a free version with fewer features, but these must be usually good enough for most people.
And those who can pay will end up paying for those who can't pay. Premium users essentially subsidise the free accounts of those who can least afford it.

We're not really sure how ActivityPub works, but since Quodari wants to be a private social network where anonymous people won't be able to see profiles with photos, to-do lists, etc., it looks like it's a closed network. It's probably more protected from AI crawlers than Mastodon. They say nothing on their website about being connected to the Fediverse.

We have signed up to Quodari 🇧🇪 🇳🇱 , a social network created by a Belgian-Dutch startup, to give the new platform a try. 😀
It's still a bit of a work in progress👷 , but it's understandable. Some of the front-end elements aren't 100%, but we know that this kind of thing takes some time, a bit of trial and error, and more users joining the platform and giving feedback.
When you first connect, the whole thing is blank, which can feel a bit empty at first. 😬
On "Discover" 🧭 , you may start checking out people's profiles - most part of profiles are in Belgian-Dutch and at least the ones we saw were mostly empty.
We decided to replicate this account there, but to write public posts we would have to buy the premium version. We're holding off on that financial step for now. So for the moment, our posts are only available to people who add us as a contact. ➕
(The challenge with new social networks is that we have to force ourselves a bit to post and create content even when the platform looks empty. It was like that on Mastodon, right? :) So we're going to post on Quodari the same we do here and see what happens. 🌱)

At boycott-flyer.eu, you can create your own flyer and choose the categories and companies you want to recommend to your friends, family, social media and maybe even print out and distribute on the metro! 🙂
You can use it to create a flyer to recommend all possible alternatives so that people can choose one of them. Or, if you prefer, you can make a flyer with just the alternatives you've decided to use.
It would be nice to see more flyers that recommend alternatives that consider other important aspects, beyond just being European, based on your values.
Maybe open-source projects, or those with a non-profit background, or alternatives actively investing in environmental sustainability, or ones where the founders or CEOs don't have a specific political background, etc etc.
It is always good to be transparent about your criteria in the flyer description, so that people can understand why you may choose one service over another, or may choose to leave out some European alternatives.
You can share yours in the comments, especially if you make it in a different language than English, because most of the flyers we see here are in English!

When one of us used to use Windows, he had Emsisoft for many years, which was made in Austria, but the company was moved later to New Zealand. We don't know if it's still as good as it used to be. He also used Kaspersky for a while, but it's Russian and there's a lot of suspicion around it, so he uninstalled. But technically speaking, at least in the past, Kaspersky was one of best.
We're going to boost the post for more reach, maybe other people know better options. :)

LUCIE 🇫🇷 : A French Open-Source Language Model developed by Linagora and the OpenLLM France consortium.
LUCIE is a open-source language model aiming to provide a transparent and sovereign AI solution for Europe. Led by #Linagora and supported by various public and private actors, #LUCIE was publicly released in January 2025.
But it faced significant criticism due to its early development stage. Users were disappointed with its performance, leading to public backlash (similar to ChatGPT's in early days).
The problem is that the project did not clearly communicate LUCIE's early training state, so now when users go to the project website, it greets them with a message explaining the model's current limitations. They encourages users to interact with LUCIE in French and English, focusing on tasks like text generation and summarization, but not complex tasks like mathematics or coding.
To support LUCIE's development, users are invited to test the model and provide feedback.
But because of the public outcry it faced earlier this year, the tool isn't openly available anymore. 😕
Now people have to sign up and ask to participate. If you want to help them train by submitting your questions and giving constructive feedback, you can try!

It's worth to say that it was acquired by OVH (the main French cloud provider) in 2023 and they are changing it completely, and trying to build an European search index together with Ecosia. So we hope they're working to "get better". :)

Someone here suggested WERO, we read about it and have just activated it in our bank. It was very simple and took 2 or 3 clicks.
An all-in-one digital wallet solution:

Stract is quite new, it's a Danish young man who created it and put it in open source. It has potential, let's hope he succeeds!
