Kaos. A Netflix show about Greek Mythology set in an alternate contemporary Europe (and more specifically Crete)? Colour me interested. I only knew two cast members, Jeff Goldblum who plays a suitably unhinged Zeus and Eddie Izzard who plays the fate Lachesis, but the rest of the cast is really good. Kaos tells the story of a conspiracy of gods and mortals to overthrow Zeus, who has become just as tyrannical as his father before him. It revolves around the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, and since all good myths are malleable, there are motifs you'll recognise and others that are entirely new and different. I really enjoyed this series, the only caveat being that it definitely does not end. Netflix, if you don't release a season 2, I'll cancel my subscription. #tvseries #mythology #greek

A ton of luck. I can't tell you how many failed ones before I got this one. I tried it again in a shoot last Monday, no idea if it will have worked... That day I got three layers of superposition that worked (shoulders, breasts and waist) which was unbelievable luck.

As I try to conceptualise these superpositions that are part of the "one and more" concept, I think about parts of the body that can be seen to join. I wasn't sure it would work at the waist, but to my surprise, it did. I'm really proud of this image, because there's so much that can go wrong in the lighting, the framing and the posture. I don't know that I'll ever get another one right, but at least I've got this one!

Hier soir, c'était le vernissage de mon expo à La Lame Vernie Coffee à Trentemoult. C'était un chouette moment de partage et de bonne humeur, avec plein d'amis de passage, mais aussi plein d'inconnus intéressés par mon travail. C'est un peu ce retour là qu'on cherche quand on expose. J'étais également très content et touché que plusieurs de mes modèles soient venus me rendre visite, et en particulier Laura, qui a fait pas mal de route pour être là. Du coup, j'en profite pour partager une photo qui n'est pas dans l'expo mais qui fait partie d'une évolution de la série Photosynthèses vers des textures plus minérales. N'hésitez pas à me dire ce que vous en pensez.

Mon copain Adrien, également collègue de studio photo a sorti de ses placards des vieilles feuilles de Washi W en 4x5 et pris un portrait à la chambre de moi-même et de notre troisième larron (sur cinq) Quentin. J'adore le rendu de la Washi W en portrait, et même si on peut penser que la plage dynamique est trop faible, j'adore le résultat. Et si vous voulez voir ce bel homme dans la fleur de l'âge en vrai, c'est ce soir au vernissage de mon expo Photosynthèses à la Lame Vernie Coffee à Trentemoult. C'est à partir de 19h et j'espère vous y voir !

Expo Photosynthèses à La lame vernie Coffee à Trentemoult du 29 Mai au 16 Juin.
Une photo de la géniale Alexandra est aussi exposée à la Lame Vernie. C'est une photo assez particulière pour moi, parce que d'une part je la trouve saisissante, et d'autre part je n'ai jamais réussi pour le moment à reproduire tout à fait cet effet. Pour l'anecdote, c'est la photo préférée de ma femme de toute l'expo, je crois.
Rendez-vous jeudi soir à La lame vernie Coffee pour le vernissage !

The image of the day is *Multitasking*, an in-camera multiple exposure photo on film.
Although everything was a bit rushed, I was keen to try some of my "one and more" images with Aleksandra, and this one, though a classic of the project, came out really nicely. I marvel at my models' ability to stay still in between frames, which contributes to the overall magic of this project. I haven't fully decided yet how these will be printed, but I'm leaning towards polaroid lifts. Stay tuned for some trials soon...

a medium format nude portrait on Washi W film.
About a year ago I met with Lomig Perrotin, of Washi film fame, and besides his whole approach to home made films which I found fascinating, one tidbit of information struck me: Lomig's initial idea of emulsion on paper was so that he could draw over photographs. I loved that idea and did various experiments with graphic artists to get them to draw on portrait negatives in 6x9. I'm not at a stage yet where I want to share any of the results, but in the meantime several of my illustrator collaborators suggested drawing over clothes and accessories was more complicated and starting with nudes would be easier. So I started shooting nudes on Washi W, and once I'd figured out how to expose this decidedly capricious film, I loved the results. I'll share a few that the Meta ecosystem deems fit for display in the next few days and weeks.

Near me there are no cacti large enough that I can use them for textures. On a business trip to Berlin in March, I found a couple of hours to check the Botanical Garden and the desert glasshouse there had these amazing cacti. This is one of the images that came out of it.

I had tried last year to photograph rock patterns in similar double exposures, but the textures were just too faint. I tried again with Theia a few weeks back, exposing the texture more prominently, and the body less. I probably need to rebalance a tiny bit more towards the portrait, but I am quite pleased with the outcome.

One of the tricks of this leaf sub-project is to have the model adopt a pose that somehow fits into the shape of the leaf. While this one was shot standing, it looks like Louka is lying and sleeping, which I think fits the partial emergence of her figure perfectly. What do you think?

My default process for Photosynthesis is to not know exactly what the texture image looks like. I like the synchronicity of parts of the texture falling on parts of the figure without it being planned. With this leaf approach though, that's simply not possible. I have to take a digital image of the leaf before hand so that the model and I know (roughly) where the leaf lay and how a pose might "fit". I wasn't too confident in this one working, but when the hand showed up in the right hand leaf I knew I had it.

Before this session, I wasn't sure that it was possible to get a convincing double exposure out of multiple leaves. They create a fragmented puzzle in which to "insert" the image, which makes the quasi blind shooting of the second exposure really tricky. Now that I see it works, I'm more inclined to try it again (previous attempts had not been very convincing).

Back in the late fall, Louka and I worked on a Photosynthesis session that had a good number of successful "leaf" images. These are probably my favourite leaf images since I started doing them. It's still a fraught process, with frequent failures as I struggle to balance the exposures of the leaf and the model. But I'll be back at it, now that it's the spring and there are leaves to work with again.
