Unfortunately this short piece gives the impression that there is at least *some* kind of political process still taking place in CCP's #bankingcolony, #Hongkong.

'Dwindling'? After pro-democracy candidates won majority of the vote *in every single district* in the last partially free District Council elections in 2019, there is now *zero space* for anyone advocating for democratic rights. Zero.
Democracy is #1 "national security" threat to the never-elected #dictatorship.
Now the "election candidates" are *all* pro-CCP; either members of CCP front groups or certified loyal sycophants from tightly aligned interest groups. Almost entirely the former.
Fun tidbit: Out of the 171 'candidates' running for 88 'closed-circuit' seats, 121 were members of three committees responsible for deciding who could participate... (Courtesy of Deäthmüffin)
It's a #CCP gravy train with blindly loyal passengers fighting over who gets just the regular gravy and who also gets all the extra helpings and countless other murky perks.

Thanks to livelihoods and eventually whole identities being dependent on 'playing ball' (i.e. collaboration and collusion) with the CCP party-state apparatus, the sinologist contingent were always going to pay by providing cover and excuses for the never-ending (un-critical!) engagement and appeasement, logically considered to be necessary for the ultimate prize: business.
Some sinologists had the nous and moral compass to try and minimize the corruptive aspects of the engagements aiding the party-state.
Most I believe took the easiest and most lucrative road and became useful tools for the machine that fed them. This ranged from learning to withhold criticism of the Party to becoming a shameless firebrand promoting CCP ideology no matter how deranged. (case in point: the so-called "peaceful liberation" of #Tibet by the Chinese communist party's army oxymoronically named the 'PLA').
The china-trained sinologist army was then recruited as academic advisers for foreign ministries across the globe, speading their gospel of the necessity of (uncritical!) engagement and appeasement over the decades. Thanks to this decades long normalization of dictatorship many people are now shocked (!) when exposed to harsh critical evaluation of the uncritical #appeasement era. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good research by #MERICS on CCP's use of sanctions against its #democratic enemies.
The real fun bit comes at the very end: "Unofficial measures".
What this means of course is that because the CCP is a *#dictatorship*, they can really do whatever they want!
CCP's "law" is just a #legalistic facade, just like it was in #Nazi #ThirdReich where the Chinese "communists" in fact copied #legalism from. 🤔

I don't wish them to "die" Just because *I* don't want or need them.
I could tell a story of a space-limited legacy system suddenly switching from a 2MB deb to frequent multi-gig flatpak ecosystem updates, but yeah, who doesn't have moar cores and limitless fat pipes...
