Drowning in the sea of bad news was a slight positive tidbit: wayland-protocols 1.42 (released last week) includes support for tablet relative dials. See e.g. the XP-Pen ACK05, Huion Inspiroy Dial2 or 2025 Wacom Intuos Pro.
With that we have the three underlying bits in place: libinput, libwacom and wayland-protocols. Compositors and toolkits can thus now finish implementing this.

libinput 1.28.0 is out, hot off the ... hotmaking things?
One new feature: three-finger drag for touchpads - that required a surprising amount of work though so please adjust your appreciation accordingly as you try it.
When enabled: three fingers down will trigger a mouse button click, moving the fingers will drag things around. Easier than tap-and-drag for many users.

- stick tap-and-drag lock
- tablet area configuration
- tablet pad modes now work even without corresponding LEDs
- the check dependency has been dropped

Apropos of nothing, a few months back I was looking for a HID parsing crate and couldn't find a useful one. So I started writing my own which is now `hidreport` for HID report {descriptor} parsing and `hut` for the HID usage tables. Both are here:

For many years *every* user of a Huion/XP-Pen/... tablet needed to add an xorg.conf entry because we didn't match against all tablets in the xf86-input-wacom driver.
Because configuration was available and easy, it was never reported upstream which means we never noticed and fixed it for everyone there.
This is fixed (upstream) now that I actually noticed.
And a fun side effect: if configuration weren't that easy we'd have had a bug report about this years ago.

Three CVEs but statistically only the first one (5367) will matter to you. And even that one really only if you're running X as root.
The second one affects Zaphod setups only and the third one only Xvfb with a Zaphod setup so they're well into niche territory, past the Unlikely canyon, and currently climbing the Improbably mountain.
