@npub1hpc…hjn3 Wonderful thread. I found it interesting that you mentioned flag as that's part of my dialect in the sense that Tolkien used it. I picked it up from my parents. I wonder how common it is still.

Clapping hands emojis between each word of a post: can we not do this please? And this is me being nice.
Imagine listening to a post with the words "clapping hands" or e.g. "clapping hands with light skin tone" inserted between each word. That's what it's like when you use a screen reader and come across something like that.
So it'd be like this:
it clapping hands with light skin tone is clapping hands with light skin tone very clapping hands with light skin tone annoying.

For the people in the back, I'm getting abusive posts thrown at me because I'm a trans woman and dare to be vocal about it online.
There's a small but loud contingent of right wing conservative Christians and TERFs who think that trans people shouldn't exist, and they think a good use of their time is to send posts like "You are a degenerate human being" at people. I know this last one in particular is a right wing conservative Christian as it was obvious from their timeline.
And before you send stuff like Oh but I'm a nice right wing conservative Christian who'd never do anything like that, I don't trust you. For all I know it's probably one of your mates doing it, or you on an alt account.
From now on anyone who's obviously one of those is getting blocked on sight.

@npub17df…m5wm If I ran a mastodon instance I'd do that. Or replace all images with no alt text with "image may contain text". Also I'd do it on a random day each week.

@npub17df…m5wm Yeah It was things like Stickers, and it doing lock screen things when you put your phone up on it's side. As far as I'm concerned, iOS peaked last year with eloquence and a recycle bin in Messages.
To be fair, that point and speak thing does sound cool, and potentially game changing if it works.

Just watched this documentary about Mick Curran and Jamie Teh the creators of NVDA, which is the free and open source Windows screen reader I use daily.
NVDA has been truly life-changing for so many people.
I think the documentary was well put together and I've learnt a thing or 2.

I’ve never seen the point of using the keycap number emojis like 2️⃣ when there’s numbers right there on your keyboard. I guess normal numbers aren’t pretty enough.

Friendly reminder that using those 'fancy text' generators to make your name or the text in your posts all pretty makes them inaccessible to screen reader users.
to you, they're just cute lettering you can just skip over. For a screen reader user like me, depending on various things, they could come out as
'mathematical small bold k mathematical small bold a mathematical small bold r mathematical small bold a',
'letter 126b letter 17dj letter 13y7dwiz'
or nothing at all.
I'm not sure off the top of my head how they appear on a Braille display but it's bound to be a right mess.
I don't particularly call any of those pretty, do you?
Plain boring text that is accessible to everyone is the new pretty.
